I would like to put in a small buckwheat plot in a new location this summer and transition it to a clover and chicory plot this fall with a wheat nurse crop. However, now that my neighbors are putting out soybeans each year, my summer plots are not really of great importance. I may or may not get around to it this summer.
The buckwheat plot in the above pic has already been transitioned to clover and chicory. When the clover and chicory play out in a few years, I can kill the grass and start all over with buckwheat.
I've also found that adding a little buckwheat to a fall planting is a good thing. It will die at the first frost, but while it lasts it's a good hunting season draw. Just don't plant a lot of it in a fall plot. You just want enough to sweeten the pot a little in early hunting season.
