Scotty the Shed Dog

If the weather cooperates, next Saturday I will travel to Indiana to a Shed Dog Trial. The information is below for those that might be interested. This will the first time for me to see one of these events.

Note: A double qualifier means a dog has the opportunity to run two different courses at this trial and if they find six antlers that are retrieved to hand on a course that is a qualifying round. If a dog does the six antler find and retrieve on both courses they have two qualifying rounds.

Correction: To be invited to the National Championship a dog only has to pass one qualifying round during the season at a sanctioned meet. In error, I originally posted that as six rounds. Glad to set the record straight thanks to our friends at Skyline Drive Kennels.

We train the pup to sight and shape of an antler first and then introduce the smell. Good shed dogs rely on their nose more than their sight. Basic retrieve works on sight.

I just got home about an hour ago and I am baby sitting a lonesome pup. He was taken to the dog park as soon as I hit town. He was the youngest dog in the kennel so he misses his crew.

It is my understanding that for a dog to invited to the National Championship they have to have six qualifying rounds during the season.

I hope my explanation is accurate - if not I will get a correction posted.

Hey Wayne, to be invited to National/world competition a dog only needs to finish one qualifier in the year preceding the championship.

Product update: there is a new product on the market called Bone Clone its supposed scientifically the most like the smell of the antler. Look for it on Facebook, my antler dog friend like the product.

To make sure I am thinking correctly, a dog that shows up next Saturday can do six finds and retrieves on either of the two courses and be eligible to go to the National Competition in April. Gosh I was way out on the limb, I thought they have to complete 6 courses with 6 finds / retrieves under the 15 minute time limit.

Let me know if I have it right now and I will go edit my post to get it to read correctly.

I just found this thread,Im so happy and look forward to shed hunting with you at my place.Maybe we can plant a skull with antlers I have that I found last year.I have a couple.
 
He will be 3 months old tomorrow. We have much work to do before we hit the farm. You and I will enjoy this dog. Your son will too I expect.

Brush we can do that once he has developed some abilities. We got some sleep around here last night.

My education is rapidly on course. Retrieve on antler is 75% if you sit him and make him watch the antler be thrown and land. I give a release and he is all about it. At this point his mouth is not tender. He is 3 months old today.

New things in his life - dog crate and a leash. No way I could do this if I was still working. He is top priority on a list of two: chestnuts in soil are # two - Scotty is King of the Castle.

And you will have three dogs - or one dog and two pups. Goodness gracious. My wife has been patient and helpful. ;)

I have Matty, the Blue Heeler, Elkie (2 year old), Rowdy (3 months old) and Heidi will be here in about a month or two. That's four dogs and house breaking Rowdy is a full time job! Wirehaired Dachshunds are great in the house because they don't shed much and they hide themselves behind and under things, so you don't notice them.
 
Wayne, I was at SHOT show this past week and got to spend some time talking to Tom Dokken. Super nice, humble guy. I asked him some tips on getting my 4 year old lab back on track with shed hunting and he was very helpful. I've got some of his rack wax product that I'll be putting to the test with my lab Lucy tomorrow afternoon. Im looking forward to following along on your progress with Scotty.

Hope when Scotty gets some ability we can get him on your 725. He is a smart dog. Right now his world got changed instantly. His pen will be finished tomorrow. He is settling down in his crate. He is three month old today.

Lucy and Scotty can learn together. We are good on sit, kennel and place. Come is natural, down is in the process. Working on lease and I introduced heel. I am using the command fetch when I toss the rubber antler. He was around top notch adult dogs with antlers. That seems to be natural to him - which is a blessing.

I thought at 63 potty training was in the past - but here we be with windex bottle in hand and a carpet floor.

How is your little one doing?

That would be great to get him on our 725. We could even do it this spring if you think he's up to it. Probably will be making a shed hunting trip early march. I'll show you our chestnuts too!

Lucy knows all kinds of obedience commands but I never worked with her enough on the shed hunting side of things. She can do sit, down, up, roll over, paw, stay, fetch, etc. when I say "find the bone" she immediately goes searching for a toy to play with. I have to make her understand now that I'm really only looking for an antler or deer part when I say that. The potty training will be over soon. Labs are really smart when it comes to that from what I've seen.

My little girl Maria is doing great. 7 months old now. She and her mom joined me in Vegas for a few days last week so she got to see all the crazy lights and neon. It was honestly too much stimulation for her age but she handled it well. I'm hoping to bring her with me on one of my shed trips this year but that requires Mom's cooperation too so we will see how that works out.

Hard to believe the daughter is already 7 months old. Some like the outdoors and some don't. I bet she will let you know which group she is best suited too.

Scotty's behavior has improved significantly in Day 2. I am getting him outside more regular and he has decided his crate is not so bad.

In March he will be 5 months and his mouth will still be tender. I purchased two rubber antlers from DogBone (Jeremy Moore). They are a bit large for the 3 month old pup but are soft. I put his platform outside. Place is a great command for him and working from the platform reinforces other things.

We have introduced stay and he loves his food treats. We are getting better at discipline on sit. He can look at the treat in my hand without an instance loss of discipline.

I agree - labs are smart. You can almost see the wheels turning.

Tom Dokken uses silhouette training to help educate a dog to "it is antler time." He lets a dog see him place the antler in front of silhouette and then he will release the dog. He moves to put the antler in a position that the dog smells the antler once he in at the silhouette. I believe Tom's methods get a dog to work away from the handler to search for antlers.

Man our Jan. temps have been so warm.

Scotty has his first trip to our local Animal Hospital for his shots. Got de-wormed, rabies, parvo booster (I think that is right name), and got a chip. The Vet wants to start the heart worm treatment at six months when we have a better indication on his weight / size. The pup did got and didn't flinch when they put the chip in. I laid my head beside his and talking gently to him and he was as good as gold.

The Vet was very pleased with his general health. Got an appointment in 4 weeks for another booster. He will get another rabies shot in one year.

He is running more in the yard when we go out for potty training. He likes his platform for training. His discipline on sit and allowing me to step back is better. He will hold with the sit with me showing the treat in my open hand. As soon as the come command is given he breaks on cue. The next few days I will work on his ability to hold with the visual distraction.

When I have him away from me - I give the come command and have his sit. I brag him up and then I give him a treat. No rubbing head or ears until after the treat.

Scotty is 100% true on the Kennel command. I love this because my wife has major back trouble and she can wrestle with him. The handler at Skyline Drive Kennels did a fabulous job with this command. He will kennel on the word command - we have not used food to kennel here. His crate is open black wire so he is not worried about the restriction.

Congrats on the new arrival. I'm not a fan of dog parks until all puppy vaccines have been given. I treat so much Parvo here in Oklahoma I am probably a little overly cautious.

Finding sheds in Florida is pretty hard cause most of the area is thick palmettos. But i have read a bunch and watched everything i could find about it thinking i would train jager to do it once he had the blood trailing down. Great work as always Wayne!!
