Here is the youth hunters spike.

And this buck made it through the first weekend. It’s actually the deer we initially thought my father shot with the bow. We never had a picture, that I know of, of my fathers buck.

I thought they were the same but now that I look harder it appears your right.

So far the trapper has caught 3 coyotes off our place this year. Last year he caught 9.

The trapper caught 2 more coyotes and the deer population seems to be strong. I haven’t run winter mineral sites in a long time but put them back out this year.

I frost seeded 2 plots today. I may have jumped the gun a little bit so I held off on the last 3. The first plot was our 1.2 acre clover field. It was still covered in 3-4 inches of snow but it’s fairly flat. That got clover, chicory, and forage collards.

Last years acre brassica plot the deer wiped out before bulbs could produce I hit with mammoth red clover and forage collards.

The 3 plots I didn’t do are on a slope and still covered in snow so I’m afraid of the seed washing away as it melts.

Two of those plots will be fallow plots I haven’t done in awhile. I hope to get decent growth from frost seeding and spray for grasses in a month or so. If not I’ll burn it down and go with buckwheat.

i wasn’t able to get to either of them with 3 plus feet of snow. I just replenished them today and it didn’t take long for the deer to come back. Winter was tough on them this year. But I’m glad I improved my food plots, thanks to you guys. My winter rye, winter wheat, and clovers are ready to pop with this warm up we are having. Just some more snow to melt. In the background of these pictures you can see one clover plot is still snow covered.

Driving around today I found 2 dead deer devoured by coyotes. I wonder how many they got this winter.

That's a good choice. I planted Eliza's Choice 3 years ago and they are bearing heavily already. Transcendent is another crabapple that's done well for me.
Incidentally, according to FedEx I'm getting 10 Improved Keiffer pears from Willis Orchards tomorrow, same zone that you are in.

I ordered the Eliza Choice because of your post a few months back. I’ll add Transcendent for next years order also.

It’s not much but my first year doing a regenerative plot. I’ve never had food this early for the deer. They are starting to hit the winter rye and winter wheat. My clover isn’t showing any sign of life yet.

Good to see the critters working at it in March. I spied a little green clover today, but not much. 99% of mine is still dormant.

I found this set of sheds in our winter rye/winter wheat field. In one of the plots there is already a 2 inch difference inside the exclusion cage vs out.

I finished spreading lime and fertilizer yesterday.

And it snowed today.

I was hoping to plant some buckwheat soon but I think I’m still a few weeks away.

I’m trying to get away from discing but this field was so rocky I figured I would give it one good cleaning before I leave it for a few years. I disced and have just been running the rock rake over it. It is still rocky but much better then it was. I’ll give it another day of cleaning and picking.
