I added 5 lbs of winfred to my brassica mix this year. It’s just getting going. Hopefully they leave it alone awhile still.

Every night I get these pictures, which is good. I better put an exclusion cage up.. If my last two thrown and mow plots take I’ll have 4 acres of brassicas. I’m thinking that should be enough.

Winfred brassica, a little bit of a soybean mix, buckwheat and sunflowers.

Here is one of our clover plots. The deer are utilizing it but it’s not as pretty or thick as previous years. I’m waiting for a rain storm to come through and broadcast brassicas, more clover, and winter rye.

Friday I broadcasted PTT, forage collards, sunflowers, buckwheat, medium red clover, ladino, and crimson clover into this field and mowed it. I leave for vacation Tuesday and there is a chance of thunderstorms Wednesday, Thursday, Friday.

I haven’t seen a grouse on our place in a few years. This hen had 4-5 young ones with her. It was nice to see.

it also looks like the woodcock are migrating through. I saw 3 of them.

About the nicest 8 I’ve ever seen on our place. I think this one is larger then my fathers archery 8 last year.

It appears as if my throw and mow into my existing clover plot may take. The buckwheat is above the clover and the brassica can be found if you look hard enough. Time will tell but anything is better then nothing. I’ll broadcast winter wheat or rye in 3 weeks.

The deer are really piling into our plots. And some really nice deer are showing themselves. I sprayed 3 acres of brassicas today for grasses and one acre of clover. I also spread 46-0-0 in anticipation of the storms coming our way tomorrow and scattered for the next 3 days.

This buck has been frequenting one of our plots almost every night. I think he’s a mature deer with an interesting rack.

I broadcasted WW, Crimson, Medium red, and Ladino clover into a failed buckwheat plot, 1/4 acre, and I mowed it. I didn’t spray or anything. I’m trying to see what can be done without chemicals. I’m thinking I should have waited another few weeks for the existing growth to start dieing off on its own. But we shall see what comes of it.

I thought 3 acres of brassica and 5 acres of clovers and grains would be enough but the deer are really keying in on the Winfred brassica. In my two separate acre fields both exclusion cages look the same. And both fields are down to small leafs and thick stems.

Winfred is really a step up from most other brassicas in my opinion. For small plots, I also like Maximum but like all BOB seeds, it’s stupid expensive.

When do Winfred stop growing? Next year I may just do 4 acres total in this field of Winfred and 1 of clover/chicory which is already in place.

this is one acre of winter rye and red clovers. The part with standing dead vegetation is red clovers and ladino.


This is looking at the rest of the field, 2 acre of brassica. The closer one is PTT the next is Winfred and then the clover/chicory plot with standing WR and Awnless WW

These blueberries are supposed to ripen in June and July. But the majority ripened a few weeks ago, were picked by birds,
or fell off. There were still plenty to be had.

This buck is probably the largest on our property this year.
