My brassicas are doing well, not as thick as I would like to see but they are growing, I’ll broadcast mammoth red clover into them later this fall.

This section of the field I’ll be planting brassicas also, but I don’t think I have enough thatch to throw and mow. So I’ll disc and cultipack this acre.

I checked some cameras, and I think I found my first week of archery stand site. I have these buck on two separate cameras. All in the morning heading back to bed. The blue dots are the cameras and the red is where I believe they are going to bed. So I moved my cellular camera in that area to see if I can gain more information on their movement.

For a few days I thought I was going to have some sunflowers to show my wife and daughters. But the deer had other plans.

The buckwheat and weeds are so thick I’m planning on mowing as high as my tractor allows, then spray the remainder of the weeds. This way I have a good kill and a decent thatch to lay on top of my oats, clovers, WR, and WW.

My other buckwheat plot never grew as well so I plan on just hitting it with the disc and not using as chemicals. I’ll be putting winter peas and WR in this plot.

I planted a handful of pumpkins on the edge of this field so leave them go and maybe I’ll get a pumpkin or two for my daughters.

The doe and her fawns have been really enjoying this clover and chicory plot the last few nights. It was planted this Spring but didn’t really fill in until a month or so ago. Some chicory did make it past them and had flowers about a week ago.

The deer are living the the T&M, but really a kill and throw, brassica plot. I’m not sure if they are eating the clover that I exposed by killing the acre or the brassica itself. But every night the deer are in it. Can brassicas be overbrowsed to early in there growth stage? Or will they keep putting on new growth?

Interesting, my bet is the clover is what they’re after right now. Our deer never touch the brassicas early, not even the radishes. Our deer are a little weird though...

Our deer are already hammering our brassicas.... It took some time, but they now spend an equal amount of time in clover and brassicas. In our plots with multiple choices, they pretty much do the buffet line. Good news is the brassicas take the grazing pretty well this time of year.

My deer devour the brassica as fast as they grow any more. Not sure why I still plant them but I did again last wk. Cheap seed and good for the soil and with an overseed in late fall of grain and clover seems to keep the deer happy year round.

I have two acres left to plant this fall, a clover mix with oats and rye and a rye and red clover mix. I’m also going to overseed my brassicas with red clover. But everything else I’ve planted this year and existing plots are being utilized well by the deer. I have a bachelor group being fairly consistent in the evenings hitting my clover field but I have them 6 out of 7 mornings heading to bed. I haven’t checked that “morning” camera in a few weeks but I’ll be checking it this weekend. Once I get my last two plots planted I’ll be mowing my clover and then I believe I’m all set for archery season to start.

mine are mostly a late season option. i haven't planted canola in while but they would always hit that early. wish i wouldn't forget about it as an option

I’m not sure what’s going on, but I’ve never had cameras over my brassica plots this early. My other brassica plot had clover survive the two shots of gly. So I assumed that’s what they were going after. However, this acre is strictly brassica until I overseed red clover this weekend.

I got my last two acres of food plots done today. The one acre is a mix of white clovers, crimson clover, chicory, winter rye and winter wheat.

The other acre is winter rye and oats. This is the thatch I was dealing with. One acre of buckwheat and one acre of weeds and grass. I killed both 3 weeks ago.

I never paid attention to our mower but it mulches what it cuts. I believe I remember reading from someone that a mulching mower isn’t ideal. I hope the seed germinates well.

The deer are really pounding the brassica I did as a throw and kill a few weeks ago.
And hitting the other acre I disced, dragged, cultipacked, broadcasted and cultipacked.

This doe was enjoying a mid day snack on some apples, while I was on my way to fertilize my brassica plot before tonight’s storm. The first wave wasn’t as much as expected but another storm should be coming through in an hour or so.

My throw and mow is coming along nicely. I see some volunteer buckwheat, winter rye, and what I believe is the first stage of clover. I don’t know what to look for when it comes to winter wheat or oats but I’m sure that’s growing too.

The deer are utilizing the food plots. And this 8 is really making himself visible during daylight hours. I have pictures of him most mornings not far from here and in the afternoons he’s been hitting the clover field.

Brassicas and grains rock! We need it all, corn, soybeans, clover, and grains but the brassicas and grains really do it here. Coons and squirrels and turkeys put a hurting on corn and soybeans here but they don’t seem to care for the brassicas and grains.

And yikes that is a wide deer.
