Live from the stand 2016!

For as good as it was yesterday morning in the heavy wind with big bucks running everywhere around me while I was bowhunting this still cold morning is sure disappointing...

Had 2 young does working around me before sunup and then 3 more does moved through a few minutes ago. I know it sounds crazy but I have not heard any close rifle shots like I have this past 2 weeks of bow season...

Spoke to my brother and two others on our club via text this morning. All 3 saw bucks with two being shooters but no shot between 815 and 930.

At 8:30 I saw one of my target bucks following a doe through a thick shelter belt along to top of a hollow. They ended up staying in the brush and heading NE.

9:00 a little 4 point came by headed west.

After 3 hours of watching and listening to the neighbor ride around on his four wheeler instead of hunting I gave up. The wind was horrible.

I'm setup about 100 yards from a Christmas tree farm. The land owner decided that today would be a good day to start cutting and bailing trees. Haven't seen a deer....

She's snoring. Kinda sounds like a soft grunt. Might bring something in.

Daughter and I hunted till 12.15 then went to get some lunch. Getting ready to try a different spot for the afternoon.

West bottom of our property somewhat out of wind. They seem to move thru here last hour of daylight. Let's hope that continues ...

All ready for the afternoon hunt.

Lol

I had to switch stands because apparently NNW wind ends up being straight W there and I am pretty sure I would have been educating the deer that use a thicket just east of there.

Back in same tree I was this morning because wind is perfect for it...

Hunting a field edge with a few posts dropping acorns.

Hunted this morn before front came thru. Saw 4 bucks all chasing does hard. Allowed all a free pass but 3rd one almost got the plug. Front came in with a vengeance with snow and 50 mph winds about 10. Got out of tree quick. Saw 4 bucks dead on road on drive home. They need to learn to look both ways before crossing and get their mind off the tush. Rifle starts Mon and same weather predicted. May head to bow only counties and skip rifle, but getting a little lazy for that type of hunting leaving at 3 am . Shall see.

Pulled up to new field number one around 1pm and the farmer was out working on his combine. I went up and talked to him and he mentioned that the guy that had been hunting new field number two hadn't been there in a week and that I might as well try it. He didn't have to tell me twice. I had walked it during spring turkey season and just prior to deer season, but really wasn't sure exactly where I wanted to set up. Ended up picking a corner of the field that sits up on a hill where I could watch the entire field. This corner sits on the back side of the only wooded part of the property, which is 5-7 acres of timber that has been logged a little. It is THICK in there, so I haven't gone in but I knew there were trails coming out of it into the field near where I set up. In the far northwest corner (roughly 120 yard shot from where I was) I was expecting to see the deer coming from. There are two big trails coming out there and a highway of tracks, not to mention that every time I have been on the property I have jumped deer out of there. Roughly 150 yards in front of me is the center of the field and a small ditch. This ditch is absolutely beat down with deer tracks. The wind is still howling, but it is drifting into the far northeast corner and even if anything came out of there it was out of range for me. About an hour before sunset I look across the field and two yearlings are hauling butt straight at me. When they hit about 75 yards I threw the gun up and grunted at them.....nothing. Just before the lead deer hit the treeline I grunted again as it hopped into the treeline and slammed on the brakes. The trailing deer stopped just in the high grass on the edge of the field. My crosshairs finally found the deers head just as it flipped up its tail and continued on. Neither deer had any idea I was there....I was hoping that a big boy was trailing them but nothing ever popped out. Just before sunset all hell broke loose. The wind had settled and squirrels were barking everywhere. Behind me, to my left, and to my right I had deer crunching through the leaves. My head was on a swivel waiting for one to walk out into the field for an open shot. To my right was the most promising. The way I was sitting, I was turned more toward my right and a deer popping out there would be the easiest, plus this deer was moving the fastest. It was probably about 50 yards from breaking into the open of the field. Apparently it was not moving as fast as its companion....that had made it to the edge of the field and caught me leaning over to try and see through the woods....needless to say it didn't end well. I continued to hear deer moving around me until after shooting light ended, but nothing ever made it out into the field. The amount of shooting from an hour before sunset until the end was insane.....it sounded like opening morning again.
Now some might say that this was a crappy hunting story because I didn't kill anything. But I enjoyed every second of it. It has been a rough season so far and getting a chance to have that many deer around me was a big step in the right direction. I also gained some knowledge of how the deer move in the evenings that will come in handy next weekend when the boys are back in town.....I am calling tonight a big win with or without a picture of a deer!

Roller coaster of emotions right now...

Slow afternoon on stand until about 4:30 when a doe and 2 dawns came by. They passed without incident and once they were gone I could hear a deer chase in our little creek bottom. A couple minutes later a single really big doe walks up out of the bottom and walks out in front of me while I am scanning hard toward the bottom for what was chasing her but never saw a thing.

She came from the east and all of a sudden I hear footsteps approaching from out of a huge hollow to the west. I finally see the deer in the fading light and it is a real beauty of a big old whitetail. He is walking up and I am trying to calm myself when he stops behind a big hickory and starts making a scrape and is just standing there looking at the doe. The doe gets nervous and turns to leave and I knew it was now or never so I found a hole past the hickory and could see his shoulder quarter to me so I put the crosshairs there and let it rip. The buck plowed the ground with his nose for about 25 yards and then got his legs under him and ran several more yards and then I could hear wheezing and it sounded like thrashing. I got down and eased toward where the sound had been because it was getting really dim light and then I heard the buck run down into our creek bottom.

I went back to point of impact and found just a few drops of blood. I shot him with a 30/06 with 150 grain bullets. Not sure what to think right now...going to leave it overnight and see what I can find in the morning...

Oh man that sucks Okie. Sounds to me like you took out one front leg for sure. I say dead deer. Good luck finding him in the morning!
