Live from the stand 2016!

It Wednesday! Heading to the 160. Finally get to hunt my new stand with a N wind. Working on about 2 hours of sleep. This deplorable stayed up way too late to celebrate the great win for our country.

Time to DRAIN THE SWAMP!

I am getting ready to head to a stand on our 80 soon. I didn't stay up because I knew I had already done all I could do by voting.

High hopes for this morning!

Shot a doe this morning. Hoping another one comes by so I can take 2 to the processor.

Had a doe come running past at 6:50 and she stopped on my right. I watched to my left and heard the most guttural long drawn out grunt I have ever heard and a huge bodied 5.5+ yr old gnarly big 6 point walked into view. He was 20 yards on my left looking at the doe 10 yards on my right and just had to take a couple steps to clear some limbs...good place to be right?

All of a sudden the doe runs behind me past him and he turns and chases her leaving me with no shot :(

The rut is a favorite but very frustrating time for a bowhunter...

7:35 I saw thick beams moving through dappled sunlight 50 yards left (north) of me. I forgot my grunt call so I can called. Deer rubbed a tree and went toward my north plot.

5 minutes later I heard something behind me and had a mid 140's 8 point moving from SW to NE behind me. I can called and he stopped, made a scrape, rubbed a tree and turned and went back the way he came...

I would almost rather leave my release home than leave my grunt call home right now :(

Hunting a very small opening on the edge of my sanctuary. Some of the best post oaks are located here and currently raining acorns. Bedding area is to my SW about 100 yards. Hoping to catch a cruising buck.

Awesome morning. I ended up seeing 4 bucks. All bucks were alone. No does seen. All bucks came in within 10 minutes after a rattling sequence. If you are in okie land get your rattling horns and DON'T forget your grunt tube.

Up at our camp in the Adirondack mountains for five days, where the deer population sucks but the company and scenery are great. In camp with my father who's 88 and in his 62nd season here, as well as my son and a few friends.

Seeing all sorts of action this evening. Just saw 6 bucks in about 2 minutes the smallest was a spike and the biggest was a big 9. The 9 pointer (Caribou buck) must be guarding a doe that is bedded down. The younger bucks are hanging around the periphery looking jealous.

Do you actually have a deer to shoot? I know you are rifle hunting and seeing all kinds of monster bucks and it seems these are the big bucks from your trail cams but you keep holding off...looking for stranger bucks?

Just enjoy being out here in the deer stand. This is a unique 2 year period for me while I wait for the age structure to mature. My 2 big boys this year are big by SC standards, I'm not sure you would bat an eyelash at them in Oklahoma. I already committed to not shooting them this year...by doing that I should have at least one 5 yo buck to target every year.

A stranger buck may show up, but I doubt it. I'll be ready if he does though.

In the meantime, there are does to shoot until the end of the season.

I should also add that I have another 100 acres of family land to hunt as well. I had never shot a deer there until this year. I've killed 2 nice bucks there this season, so it's nice being able to alternate properties.

About sick after looking at these pictures from yesterday. First one is me putting some rice bran in a spot and then walking another 300 yards to a stand I figured would be the bomb!

He's got you patterned.

BTW...you guys are killing me. I have one more day to work then I'm off for 17 days straight. To say I'll be in a stand a lot is an understatement but I will not over hunt any one place.

Good luck to all.
