Let's eat some fresh 2019 apples....

Striped June is my earliest apple and we have had some ripe ones for several days. It is more of a cooking apple rather than eating apple to me, but my son likes tart apples and eats the Striped June right off the tree.

Bevan's Favorite is my second apple to ripen, and I ate my first ones for the year this morning. They come in about the time Striped June is finishing. Bevan's is a great eating apple for an early apple.

CAR is the worst here that I have seen it for many years. The two trees above are highly CAR resistant, but the Goldrush at the farm looks like it is almost completely defoliated. I've been holding off on topworking it - trying to decide what I want in that spot. It is a prime hunting season spot, so I want to make a good choice. Right now I'm leaning toward topworking it to Yates. It's hard to beat for a late deer apple.

Next apple starting to ripen - starting right now is Summer Champion. These are an excellent early apple for fresh eating or about anything else

Most of my apple trees are making big crops this year, but not this one. It had a big crop last year and slacking a little this year. I only had about 20 apples on the tree, and a bad storm got a bunch of them.

My Priscilla apples are just beginning to ripen. Many are still green and will ripen over the next few weeks, but several are ready now. I ate some today, and they were delicious. This one is at the top of my list for favorite eating apples that requires no spraying.

Betsey Deaton is ripening. I test tasted a few today, and they are excellent. These apples are long keepers so no big hurry in harvesting them. This is a tree that can get CAR and is a good example of a tree that does great despite CAR.

We picked about a bushel of my horse apples at the farm and mom made two Mennonite Dutch Apple pies for me. HOLY COW those things are good. Just love it when the apples start coming in. Next time, I'll make pictures.

Let's have a change of pace and eat some fresh 2019 pears. Ayers are prime time right now.

I have two trees at the house that are close to 35 feet tall and one at the farm that is about 25 feet tall. All three loaded from top to bottom.

What are they good for? Preserves? Eating out-of-hand? Sure are pretty.

They are the best eating pear going. Another name for them is Sugar Pear because they are so sweet. You can also make preserves if you pick them before they get too soft. Never seen any fireblight or any disease. No spraying.

Well then, I need to beg a few scions off of you this winter. I have two seedling pears about three years old in need of top-working.

Beautiful fruit there!
Limiting spray by selecting the right tree is so appealing for so many obvious reasons.
I can grow peaches and pears pretty well but my apples tend to look like Quasimodo’s head.
