Kaleo Hills-Property tour

Sure wish we could trade some poplar for oak. I’d bet our stand is 50%+ poplar. Maybe 5% oak on average but a little better in a few spots. This land was likely high graded several times in the last century.

I need to hire a forester to cruise our place. Timber prices have made a good rebound on the east coast.

Yes at the house I just sold 40 miles away the 300 ac behind it was about half poplar . Odd how that works. Im waiting on RO market to take off. Most of that is shipped to China for furniture sold back to us and that export was hurting last 4 years due to the China tariff hassles. My land is probable more RO in mature stage than WO as disease has hurt the WO somewhat. Even my walnut is lowballed. But I'm comparing prices from 15-20 years ago during the boom. Plenty of logging going on here tho, prices are good enough. And I'm building this year so no time to oversee a logging operation. Next year tho....

Thanks, it was a short trip with a never ending list of projects. I’m beginning to realize my projects will never be 100% completed but that’s part of the fun.

We took advantage of the sparse vegetation and found two iron pin corner markers I’ve been looking for and cleared a path for easy creek access at camp. Even had time to listen to the grouse drumming!

That’s awesome. I’ve seen very few grouse in my life. I totally agree that the work will never be done.

Winter in the hills.

Spring has sprung in the mountains. The deer seem to appreciate my fall plantings.

Ramps are popping up, I may eat a few this year.

I’m really impressed with Northern Whitetail Crabs. Several of my 2018 trees are 12’+.

I need to get a few Nativ nurseries pears out of tubes and into cages.

My NWC trees did really well last year. I need to hit them with some fertilizer this year. I’ve got 8 coming from them next week. That’ll be 11 total from them. Can’t wait to see them at year 5.

Harvested a few ramps.

Nest success is typically very low but I still hate finding turkey eggs like this.

A few trail cam pics. I soak most of my cameras all year, it’s like Christmas when I make it to a camera that’s been out a while.

I’m pretty sure this is the buck I shot in November about 13 hours before I shot him. Over 1,200 yards, .7 miles, from where I killed him.

Another good buck still running hard in early December.

Spring family trip update.

We had a successful hunt and family camping adventure this week. I was on birds all three days and finally sealed the deal Wednesday morning right off the roost.

After I arrowed my bird his buddy put on a good show.

I spent six hours in the blind with my 11-year-old daughter Tuesday morning. She was a trooper. We had deer and turkeys in bow range. We passed on these jakes.

It was a long uphill hike in the dark but a much warmer downhill hike after the hunt.

Some nice pictures, I like to see young hunters getting out in the field. It looks like big boss Tom means to push young Jake right out of the picture.

Always a nice read. Looks like your blooms escaped our late freeze and snow.

Thanks dogghr. We’re probably 50/50 with the fruit trees. It looks like quite a few didn’t blossom until after the last hard freeze.

My oldest has been hunting with me since she was 4. She’d be the one shooting if I could convince her to shoot a shotgun. I’m planning to work her up to a 20 gauge and .243 this summer starting with a .22 and 17 HMR.
