Kaleo Hills-Property tour

I think you are in love, with your place. Really looks awesome and glad you got to escape miserable Hawaii. LOL. Can't beat the mountains for hunts, always feel like wilderness, and in some ways for today it is. I hunt against a 4000 ft mountain but unlike you my place sits at half that elevation so weather is somewhat more tolerant. Those winds you speak required a repair to my old barn doors. Thanks for showing and glad you had a great trip.

Thanks! Yes the hills offer challenges but I wouldn’t trade it for flat land. The mountains are beautiful.

I’m asking my neighbors to save the lower jaws so I can send them off for aging. We’ll all learn from the results.

I’m with you on the mountains. I’ve got some elevation changes to deal with and some decent climbs to get to some stands. However, it’s hard to beat all the hollars, benches, ridges and secondary ridges. The topography and remoteness seem to protect many of the lower age class bucks. No shortage of places for them to hide.

My neighbors (and most hunters) hammer the nice 2yo’s and the occasional 3yo. Enough make it through to leave several mature bucks to go after.

I forgot to ask my taxidermist to save the jaw bone on the buck I killed this year and it was already mixed in the pile when I called. A couple of my friends also killed bucks that we should have aged the jaw bones on and weighed. This will be a requirement going forward.

Well, it’s been a while. We’re now living in Virginia, no more complaining about the travel to our property. A six hour drive isn’t all that bad!

Some of my trail cameras have been out since last August and as expected the batteries were dead and/or cards full. I was able to swap cards and add fresh batteries to some in late November. Here are a few bucks with real potential in 2020.

We have some relatively big plans for our place this summer fall. Now that we're in the same time zone as our property we'll have the opportunity to use it more often.

Planned summer purchases:
Shipping container
ATV
ATV sprayer
cultipacker (Packer Maxx)
ATV trailer (leaning towards this Bannon utility trailer https://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200674077_200674077 )

Property plans:
Put in a small gravel driveway and gravel/sand camping area
Spray all plots ~05 September
Plant fall plots
Start enjoying the property as a family!
Hunt!!!

I take it you're having someone come in to bring and spread gravel? Are you also going to do a pad on which to set your container?

Yes. My neighbor owns an excavating business. He’s done work for me in the past, mainly road repair. He’s building the campsite and shipping container area. Shipping container will be on either 6x6’s or rail ties on gravel.

Busy Labor Day weekend in the hills. I loaded the kids up at 3:30AM, with few exceptions they were in the car running errands on the NC/TN border until almost dark.

The campsite was finished a few hours before we arrived, they did a great job.

I broadcast seed, cultipacked, and sprayed my smallest plot (~.2 acre). I put seed on the remaining two acres but with all the blackberry brush I wasn’t going to have time to spray with a backpack sprayer. My neighbor has been volunteering his tractor/sprayer and stepped in to save the day.

It was a busy trip and I didn’t take many pictures. Archery season opened today! I’m not going to make it up this weekend but it’s nice to know I can hunt now through January 1st!

Absolutely! I definitely tried to cram too much into one weekend. I need to do a better job of separating “work” trips and family time. But, I’m pretty sure they still had fun.

Good luck on that one. I had family up last weekend, and I was ready to bounce off the walls when I wasn't doing stuff in the woods or garage.

A quick hunting report. One buck and one doe arrowed just in time for the official start of fall. 37 degree nights and 60 degree days sure felt great!!!

Shot both deer from the same tree on the same evening, red and chestnut oaks had them coming in like crazy. The northern white oaks on our place aren’t dropping at all.

Foot plots looking good...I think. Definitely a work in progress. Glad I made the decision to spray.

I was only 45 minutes behind a sow and her cubs one morning. I must have pushed them up the hill when I parked my truck.

Jet boil and instant coffee made tent camping more bearable on those 37 degree mornings.

Camp was peaceful at night. I slept like a baby.

Caught a few fat rainbows one day. Fun trip! With venison in the freezer I may wait until November to hit the hills again. We’re headed up mid October to see the fall colors but I doubt my bow will make the trip.

How do you beat a double wammy??? Nice buck and doe in the freezer and rainbow on the fly. Good stuff! Glad to see you are now close enough to enjoy your property.

Nice job! I think about your place a lot when I’m at my family’s mountain house close to Hendersonville. I love Western NC.

Congrats on the successes!! Your place is looking great and I echo Triple C about you being close enough to enjoy it now.
