Back from a productive weekend in the mountains. I met a logger to discuss future thinning. We’ll likely get started January 2022.
Last years fall plots have run their course. I sprayed most of them and planted ~1 acre.
This plot (.8 acre) was sprayed and planted (broadcast) 60 pounds of Jerry oats, and 40 pounds of buckwheat. If my neighbor has time, it will be mowed as well. I’ll add cereal grain, clover, and brassica in early September. Another .2 acre plot received the same treatment.
My natural licking branch is no more….
Such a bummer, this scrape was tended daily.
Paracord to the rescue. I removed the original licking branch and suspended it above the scrape. A tree is prepped ~10 yards above.
Seemed like a good idea to put a mock scrape on a similar skid trail. I’m hoping to turn this spot into another community scrape, it certainly has potential. A pre-set ladder is 20 yards away.

This sumac was almost killed, I thought for sure it was a tree of heaven.
The old apples along the creek are loaded!

This is the other plot I sprayed, it’s about .25 acres. I have pre set ladders on two sides.
I’ve only used this sprayer one day but so far I’m a fan.
Parts of my plots are really too steep for an ATV sprayer. The nozzle option on this sprayer has quite a reach, I’ll probably use it on the really steep sections next time.
We have a piebald fawn in the neighborhood. Sure would be cool to have a mature buck like that running around!
I got stung 7 times while standing on a yellow jacket nest, those X#£%ers are mean!

I bought the 16 gal version last year. Works great! Bought the 16 gal spot sprayer this year for apple tree spraying. Same results. No complaints. Hopefully they last many years. Way better than a backpack sprayer!

This one (25 gallon) has a spot sprayer and hose. It’s WAY more impressive than my solo backpack sprayer!

yup my 16 gal boom has the spot too but I refuse to use anything that has had gly in it on my fruit trees. Plus my little 3 gal sprayer wasn’t cutting it any more on 30 trees. Now I’ve doubled that.

Oh gotcha, you’re spraying the actual trees. That makes sense. I haven’t done that yet, so far I just mow, cut, or spray the competition.

Big announcement! Turkey poults caught on camera for the first time since we purchased our property! They were pretty big by the time they showed up but it’s nice to know there is decent brood rearing habitat in the neighborhood. Looks like a really great survival rate so far.

This is a small bear, he’s a regular on our place and apparently loves getting his picture taken. The big ones are probably camping out on the neighborhood corn feeders.

This past weekend was an unexpected sprint up to our property in an attempt to get seed on the ground in front of Ida.
I sprayed our plots on August 8th and broadcast buckwheat and oats on half the plots August 9th. My neighbor mowed on 12 August. Three weeks later, the BW and oats are coming on strong.
I added WR, WW, Clover (x4 species), PTT, radish and vetch Sunday.
My other plots were sprayed on the 8th as well but no seed added. I spot sprayed Saturday and broadcast seed Saturday evening. The same cool season mix my other plots received +oats (no BW on these). My neighbor mowed them Sunday morning.
If we get the predicted 1-3 inches from Ida we’ll be looking good. Ida is the only moisture predicted in the ten day forecast. Fingers crossed.
I pinched over a dozen apples off this 2019 planted Dolgo crab. I’m not ready for the bears to trash it.
I added a mock scrape to this small plot. I have a tree prepped ~25 yards away.
Lots of bears roaming around and around have pictures of a buck out of velvet already (pics from 24 August). Good buck for our mountains.

It was a busy and fun opening weekend in NC. I caught the tail end of a cold front with a 44F opening morning. I arrowed this doe from the same tree I shot my last doe from in 2020. I passed a doe/fawn pair but this one had another doe with her, likely last years fawn. 10 yard shot.
I hunted Saturday evening and saw deer but nothing under 50 yards with the exception of a few I jumped on the way in.
Plots are doing well, thanks to the last Hurricane. It’s really drying out and at this point I’m counting on cool damp mornings with heavy dew until we get more rain.

I slept in Sunday morning and hunted one of my favorite ridges Sunday afternoon. I had a two does and a fawn come in early. I assessed the smaller doe as last years fawn and shot her at 5 yards.
It warmed up quite a bit by Monday, I’m looking forward to more cool fall days in a tree!

Congratulations on the harvest, and your crabapples look great. My 30-06 crabs look good but my Droptine is not so good.

I didn’t take pictures but I had a bunch of small yellow crabs on either a 30-06 or a 10 point. I pinched all of them off with the exception of the droptine, it’s too tall. Also had a few good size apples on a NWC a grey ghost.

Here is what my 30-06 looks like with the first crop. I'm anxious to see if they fall during hunting season or just hang on the tree all winter.
