J-birds place

Decatur County authorities wanted me to inform you that they are charging Lodging Tax for anyone who hunts from the Mobile Hut.
Great Job. If your luck is not so good at your place I would suggest you slip it into Kentucky around Native's Garden of Eden!

It's funny you say that....we was walking thru the store the other day and my one daughter points out a "for rent" sign.... "Dad, you can rent out the new battle wagon n the summer as a summer cottage!" As far as KY is concerned.....I have a funny feeling i'm not going to get me past the DOT! Besides....even when it was empty top speed was about 30mph......if I left now I might make it to Native's place for Thanksgiving! I'm figuring as soon as it is out in the field I'll get a visit as it is.....Sheriff's department will think it's a meth shack!

Maybe you should chock the wheels when you're sitting in the "battle wagon" or that Indiana breeze will have you coasting downhill with a Pat McManus style story to share...
I had to look up who that was.... I do enough dumb stuff as it is....and typically share...so everyone can get a good laugh. Rolling away in my blind would be quite the adventure.....but it's one I prefer to avoid.

Cmon J-Bird, you know that thing is more road worthy than 50% of the vehicles on Indiana roads.

I will save you a turkey drumstick and some dressing if you make it here by Thanksgiving....;)

Seriously, I like it and that has been a great project for you and your kids!

Quite the shooting condo J. Especially liked your building in the rain /middle of the night construction. Hilarios. Good luck out of it hunting.

Making it there is one thing....it being intact is an entirely different task! I have a funny feeling the DOT boys would not appreciate my slow speed coming down I-65......besides with the current height I probably have to have some sort of stupid "over sized" permit as well. I don;t think the SMV sign will get me much slack.....it would be just a pile of moving violations!!!

The biggest thing I have learned is that I am no carpenter, expanding foam and caulk are wonderful things and rain is terrible for a construction project.

I'll let you eat your turkey in peace..... Besides that is during our general firearms season....so hopefully I'll be busy using it and putting a deer on the ground.

You ever hear the saying, “a grinder and paint makes me the welder I ain’t “ ? Well, expanding foam and caulk..... someone once told me that half of being a good carpenter was learning how to hide your mistakes. I’m still learning that skill but I give myself lots of opportunities.

I go tooling down the road with that monstrosity pulling it with my 96 pick-up, with a quick stop at the local gas 'n go for some slim jim's, cheap smokes, some monster energy drinks and some gas station pizza.....it's gonna cause a scene.....because every damned strung-out, toothless, tattoo covered, meth-head chick is gonna come a running! Seriously! The smell of cheap smokes, nasty pizza and slim jim's will get there attention and once they see I got a truck (that runs), my own mobile home/meth lab (like a mansion on a hill with money to burn), and I ain't terribly ugly.....it's gonna turn into a riot. It's gonna be like "the bachelor for meth-head chicks"!!!! Nope...I'm probably safer hiding it in the woods or the like.....I'm all for women wanting to fight over me and all.....but I like my women to have teeth and not be under house arrest!

Building and the like in the dark and rain is NOT something I would advise.... I am simply too impatient and sometimes .....reasoning goes right out the window.

My grandfather always used a saying, "Drawn to thousandth's, measured with a tape, cut with a torch, grind to fit and paint to match".

Normally I would not be as particular as I have been with this one. But as I build these I realized that the better I seal them and the better the materials I use and the like the longer they last. This one is a far cry from the first one I ever built...but still far from perfect. I am getting tired of the mouse crap and wasp nests I contend with in the others I have built in the past. If this one goes well, the other may be in trouble!

Project battle wagon is far enough along to cal it COMPLETE. Saturday I took if out into the field, found it a good location and I button up a few things and it's ready to hunt!

Any way....I guess the wife was having a panic attack while I was on the move with it. The hill was a bit of a pucker moment, but I survived. I'm not sure how bad it was....all I could see was in the rear view mirror....might have been a good thing.

I got it up on blocks and leveled out.... This was actually easier than I thought it would be. The tires are off the ground to where they will spin freely.
BW up on blocks.jpg

I then got an idea to get even more stability and essentially set up an "outrigger" sot of thing where I ran a long 4 x 6 under the wagon and then jammed a 2x8 up under the lip of the cart and then kicked the other end of the board until tight and screwed a block to hold it. Did this on both sides and it is VERY stable now.

Polished off the interior with more sealing and some carpet....

and decided that the windows need some sort of covering so I put up some burlap "curtains" if you will. This really helps from being skylined between the windows. 2 layers of burlap was just what I needed.

So now we hunt....general firearms opens on the 16th!
The path shown here is one I use all the time so the deer are used to people traffic in this area.

Inside looking out the south window. The corn field near edge is 75 yards.
BW view south.jpg

The west view.... This is a point on a elevation change of 50 feet or so.
BW view west.jpg

Then the north view.... where I have a clover plot and some apples trees (50 yards out) and beyond that my soybean plot that the near edge of it is 100 yards out.

Then my boy chipped in with his own addition to the project....this is the drivers seat out of an international semi truck. You talk about comfortable...gonna be tough to stay awake.... He is gonna get a hole saw and put a cup holder in the plywood! We need to put larger casters on it, but it leans back, arm rests are fully adjustable, lumbar support....

You might want to take the flags down...I have one at my driveway and it scares the bejesus out of deer...

I was in the blind to drop something off....drove down with the truck.....decided to hide form the wife for 30 minutes or so. 3 does walked out into the plot and didn't show any signs of being bothered. I could hear old glory flapping in the breeze inside the blind. Now it may affect a more mature animal....but it doesn't bother them all. My other blinds have orange flags on them to hopefully prevent being shot at....the deer don't seem to mind. I think with time they get used to it. If I had more deer to be able to get more data points it would be an interesting study to do to see if it did have an impact.

Deer that live there constantly may get used to it but if I remember correctly you are always waiting for a passer through rut buck? He may not like it quite as much...

I thought about that some when you mentioned it. The locals may be fine, but the outsider may not.... I guess I figured the poon would over-ride their fear....but maybe not.

I take them flags down and start seeing bucks I didn't see before....I'm going to so kick myself in the behind!

I want to officially call BS on Indiana weather! It's November 12th and last night we had not only snow, but a fair amount....broke a 108 year old record for snowfall on the day.....now it's cold...not supposed to get above freezing today. This is TOTAL BS!!!!
nov snow.jpg

Now to demonstrate just how crazy this is....it was 60 not 2 weeks ago, and it's forecast to reach back up into the 50's early next week.....typical IN weather....multiple season all in the same month!

It was 70 here on Sunday. Monday morning started at 55 and dropped to 22 by evening. Was 14 last night and not supposed to get above freezing today. Everything is frozen because we got more freezing rain than snow...
