Perch? That looks like a bluegill to me! You seem to have some nice bucks around as well....hopefully that translates to an exciting deer season for you. I was gonna plant an area of sunflowers in my bigger plot this year but the area had standing water when I tilled the plot and decided better of it. I need to get my beans sprayed and then get them over seeded. Mine are flowering now.... I didn't dig thru the thread....is the Okra for you or the deer?

It's not uncommon to have kids out here fishing and goofing, I was glad the church wanted to come out here though. 22 kids is a lot for our congregation! I think most caught at least one and they all seemed to have fun.

Sunflowers are an incredible draw but I've never planted in water.

They were bluegill, but anything not a crappie, bass, or channel cat is a "perch" when dealing with a gaggle of kids.

The okra was from some guy up north. He sends me seed sometimes and want to know how it grows in KS and if the deer like it. So far they haven't touched the okra... but I have! Picked some tonight (kind of tough to do with a Throw-n-Mow jungle plot and a flashlight).

Lots of Weirdo's up north...good folks...just a little "off" at times! Some even have cat's for friends. They do some strange things up there. I think it's the long winters that just make their brains work differently. Next thing you know he will be sending you some gypsum!

Yep, a bunch of kids with fishing poles and the like it's best to keep things as simple as possible. Hopefully they all caught something and had a good time. Fishing is a great way in my opinion to introduce the kids to the outdoors...you just gotta take them to where you know they will catch fish. Those short attention spans wander quickly. If I told my kids they caught a "perch" they would look at me like I had lost my mind....

As for the okra...what are you doing...jack-lighting them? They ain't deer...most folk pic veggies during the daylight!

I'm already on the gypsum bandwagon, he got me hooked a year or so ago!

Sometimes there isn't enough hours of daylight in the day... so ya spotlight your veggies. Did you know spider eyes "shine"?

Do you do all those T&M, especially the alfalfa?? I also overseed each year with alfalfa but not sure it takes but after 7 years it must be doing something. I need to ck on that awnless wheat here. Mental note. And I have say there aren't many Vacation bible school parties that include cattle lake side. Pretty cool. Thanks for showing.

Yes dogghr, it will all be Throw-n-Mow. I don't expect all of it to be successful, something always wins out. I tend to have areas of nice mixes... and patches where it's basically a monoculture culture. Not sure about overseeing alfalfa due to autotoxicity. I intend to use clovers when the alfalfa starts to get weak.

Lol the cattle are always around and the kids didn't think twice about them. There are 315 less as of Monday. If we get a rain or two in the next 2 months the pasture should recover well as it kept up nicely this summer.

Getting ready for dove season with our annual burn. Lots of seed on the ground and a display of the importance of thatch. Seed on bare ground doesn't compare to seed under a layer.

I normally do European mounts at home. I have a mix of hair whitening products that I have kids use to whiten skulls in the classroom that works well on deer also. We ended up taking this one to the taxidermist though (he's a friend of ours). It was a good excuse to visit some.

Have you been getting any rain? My dad's place has gotten almost 7in to our 2in recently. I'm dry!

We got a little rain here. Glad you got a good rain. I was watching all that orange and yellow north of us while the light green settled in here. When I was driving across Kansas a couple of days ago I noticed Wichita and areas south into Oklahoma looked a lot drier than north of there and south as well.

It was nice to get the rain, a lot of it has been close but missed us lately. Glad to see you are back home even if you did have to drive through the flats of KS.

Throw-n-Mow bean plot is doing well. It's looking like it will average 20-30 pods per plant, tons of okra, some brassicas, and lots of pumpkins (the little white pumpkins are from a vine that the squash bugs killed). I haven't sprayed or fertilized this plot once... ragweed and grasses seem to like this method!

Thanks. Here's some of your seed Mark! No fertilizer and no herbicides. It was supposed to be in a thick stand of beans... but the deer didn't let that happen. The sorghum heads are almost ready for them to get hammered. There's already some testing going on. Once they are yummy the heads won't last more than a couple of nights. Except for the stuff that's 10ft tall, the birds get those.
