Plenty of thatch on this plot. I was a little wishy-washy on spreading seed so hopefully it turns out ok. If not it wasn't mother natures fault this time! She gave me rain when I needed it!

I wondered how much you guys got. I have a friend near you that was reporting 2+ inches almost every day. The last time I asked he was over 8 inches for the week... We were a different story; we got almost 3 inches TOTAL for the week. Amazing how such a short distance can make that much of a difference. I hope your place doesn't flood out and good luck this fall!
And we got .5 total out of 4 rain events this week...now the forecast is showing it getting dryer again...

Dang okie! You must have a bubble around your place. I never expect or count on August and September rain but it was hard for this system to miss ya! The central part of KS got hammered this last week. It just sat in one spot and dropped rain all week. I'm actually thankful that I was on the edge of it. Pratt and Manhattan kind of got flooded.

Been a busy fall. Stocked some ponds, grew some pumpkins (deer still won't eat them even though I read that they love them), had kids plant their own plots, and found lots of great tasting fall mushrooms.

I deflated one a couple of weeks ago with my bow. He's damn near the smaller twin of one I shot a few yrs ago.

My youngest shot one with a crossbow yesterday morning. He was a happy camper! We celebrated by shooting ducks, catching fish, and eating the rest of the day.

Cool. I planted pumpkins the first time this year, too. They are eating the heck out of mine, pumpkins, and even the dead vines. They left the vines alone, for the most part, when they were growing. I did smash a few of them, remembered one of the northern guys saying that it would help them get a taste of them.

Yes it is. Funny story... when my boy shot his deer yesterday morning it walked off instead of running. We weren't sure of his shot so we waited a few hours to look for him. The kid's biggest concern was losing the meat. He kept asking if we waited too long if the meat would be lost like mine. He wanted to make sure he shot a big bodied deer to make up for the meat we didn't get from mine. I'm pretty proud of him. (Mine was rotten when they found him, but I tagged him as I did kill him).

That can make it slow. I have some good pockets of cover that mature bucks hole up with does during the rut. Hunt the downwind side of those pockets and being there all day can produce big.

Congrats to all especially your youngest. Did he score near plot he planted? Few years back I was deciding between Turkey hunting or crappie fishing. I quickly decided I could buy a Turkey as good as any I would kill, but no store could match the crappie I might catch!

No, actually the deer he shot was taken from his "tree house" Christmas gift from last year that sits on the edge of the yard. He plays in it during the summer and apparently shoots rutting bucks from it in the winter. It was just a random rut chase that happened to go in front of him and had nothing to do with a plot. The kids's plots are at my parents place that's 30 minutes from here. They occasionally shoot a deer there but usually its mostly doves and turkeys on their plots.
I don't know what it is about winter caught fish but they always taste great to me. I hardly freeze fish anymore and just catch them if I want to eat something fresh (unless we are planning a fishfry, then we freeze a couple of batches). I think you made the right choice!
