Hawggardville

Old springs and structures like that are very interesting. Reminds me of some places around here. The government land we hunt is army corp of engineer land and there is old home place foundations scattered on it where they bought people's land before they damed the river.

I have been gathering bottles to try direct seeding like that just cutting them out a little at a time until I put some chestnuts out. I picked up some clear cups any reason you chose foam or was it just on hand?

I wanted the foam to help protect the tree from the sharp edges of the bottle. Once the tree gets growing I think that it should provide good protection on windy days.

I direct seeded some chestnuts this weekend using your coke bottle method. Didn't take any pictures but will keep an eye on them to see if it protects them enough to get started. I did mine slightly different I doubt it matters but I brought the cup up through the bottom no good reason other than they stayed in place better while I taped them. I also put all mine together before I went out this saved some time but was more difficult to get situated with the chestnut which is expected. I'll try to take some pictures next time not that it really matters.

I'm looking forward to the pics. I did check on mine this past week and had two that probably squirrels had tried to get to. The bottles kept them out though they ate the foam cup off one. I replaced it and put the dirt back on the other where it tried to digit up.

This is my try at protecting my chestnuts I checked mine today and nothing has got in them yet. I still have a lot more of them to set I should have 8 containers ready by this weekend. For these I just tape the handle to a fiberglass rod I drive in the ground I think I got them from TSC. I have been using that gorilla tape native hunter turned me on to it he wasn't kidding it's good tape almost take the hide off your fingers.

I might consider consider using tubes in the future but I will be caging these chestnuts once I get some top growth. These are just temporary protection until they can be window screened and caged. Seems like the last tubes I used was a pain to keep stuff from getting in to the nuts granted I didn't experiment with them much.

Had a friend of mine bring his tractor and cutter over to help clear an opening in an old grown up pasture. Anything to big for the cutter, I'd get with a chainsaw. It spit snow all day so it turned out to be a great day in the hills as usual.

I also grafted some Perry pear varieties on Cleveland pear as a fireblight resistance test. They are looking pretty good.

The freeze got a few of my pears, but the apples are just starting to bloom. I fertilized the apples and grafted some useful pear varieties on some wild pear.

Merle

Can you explain how you will use the tree nursery. Will you direct seed or plant small seedlings? When do you move the seedling out of that location to the final location? How old will be the seedling likely be and what month do you plan to move them?

I am very interested in your concept. I always learn a great deal reading your thread.

Thanks for sharing.
