Geo in Co

Thanks guys

Love the scenery....the terrain makes me ache!

I have a premonition.....you've already made friends with a fox....pretty soon you will make friends with bears at the water edge....then start camping and living with them in commune....then you will feed them the tofu queen!

It will have to be a bear in Montana, she moved back to where she came from. I actually had time to get some work done and think about hunting. Speaking of which.

My goal was to reach the meadows up under Bald Mountain where the herds hang out but I didn't make it.

I was on the other side of Cimmerona last Sunday.

I have a learning curve here. I put myself in a great spot with a chance to kill if it wasn't for my ineptitude as a hunter. I bumped along a nice muley buck on the trail. Then as I was debating about continuing on without a trail I heard a bugle from the top of the ridge that I came around. I made some pitiful squeals and two bull elk responded each time and came down the hill. After about an hour I decided to head back. I thought that I scared them off but as soon as I crossed the creek I bumped up one and then the other. They both hung up and bedded down with in 100 yards of where I was calling. They were both young bulls, 4 or 5 pointers. I cursed myself most of the way out. One of these mornings I might go back in early and set up in that natural food plot. The video only has tiny glimpses of animals but it is a good look at the natural food plot.

My cow call didn't work because it was wet.

Yep, you've got the fever now. When they hang up, try busting some brush and raking on the trunks of trees, like you're another bull.

Where there's Geo, there's fire. :D
Great pics man. Cant wait to see you packing some meat out of there.

P.S. the geo pear has grown strong this summer. I think its a go. Let me know when you need a stick of your tree back to graft in CO.

George, you're still way early in the rut. Give those bulls a couple weeks and they will respond differently. I've found a fold up Montana cow decoy when hunting solo is helpful. Place it some visible distance behind you. Good luck!

I hear ya, in hind sight I should have gone back down to the other side of the creek when I saw the bulls coming down the hill. I have always been an "oh, I'm sorry, I just took 12 pictures then I killed you sort of ambush hunter. I bought a hoochie momma today but it is going back. I also bought a white diaphragm and for the first time in my life I finally figured out that they go further back in to your pallet.

Thanks John, but I'll have to be happy knowing that a part of me lives on through you. Sweet clover in the road gravel gets about two feet tall here, in the clay that is my soil, about 1 1/2 feet. My growing season is about 10 minutes. I will get hungry so a pack out is inevitable.

Well, that was neat. Beautiful countryside and so glad you are taking us along for the climb.

I'm trying to keep the elevation gain down.

I know it's early, in all my years I have never killed a deer on the first or second of October.

It just gets more breathtaking with every picture. Cimmerona looks like it is touching the clouds.

Like the Smokies or the west cost mountain ranges from Alaska to California, the mountains here are the rain forest.

The adventures of Geo and his sidekick! Good stuff Geo. What beautiful country. My boys leave later this week for 10 days of chasing elk about 2 hours or so north of you somewhere near Mt of the Holy Cross and Hunter's Frying Pan wilderness area. Looking forward to following along on your elk learning curve.

You just keeping my appetite going. Haven't been in that country for 6 yrs now. I see a change in my plans in future. Really great read and as in Iowa, always like the video ride. Good luck with the Wapiti.

I liked the part where the trail peters out, that's when you're alone with nature; just you and God. I never miss a Geo post, and look forward to using the knife you sold me. I'm wondering how you'll pack out an Elk when you're four hours into the mountains; I think you'll need a helicopter.

And that was today, I made it up to the meadows. I didn't see or hear any elk up there. I went up quiet and tooted my horn on the way down.

I was in hunt mode on the way back moving quiet again thru the woods on the lower leg. I was camera in hand still taking fungi photos

when I heard something ahead. I took my pack off, stashed the camera, and put the pack back on then continued the hunt. I moved ahead and positioned myself up on a big log looking down when I was swarmed by flies. I knew that I was amongst animals. Then this guy comes walking up to me.

He was hanging with what I called a button bull still in velvet, a spike. He got a free pass and I went home a happy hunter. It was a ten hour hunt and I got my monies worth today.

Me thinks you have found a beautiful locale. It is a special gift to know when to be stealth! I know that was exciting.

When I'm surrounded by flies I know cattle are near. Those are some nice hikes, and I have a feeling you'll get your Elk.

Thanks guys

I like it up there Brad and if I can find a writing utensil the note will read something like-

I George, being of sound mind and broke legs, do hereby leaveth my bowtech to whatever finds it. It is a good bow, and killt the elk that killt me. Anyway, I am dead. Yours truly, George.
