Foodplotting In The Mountains...The Sequel

Bow opened this past weekend. Went hour after daylight for a sit. Saw 6 bucks w two maybe shooters all at 15 yds. This is one of my original stands on the property. Looks like a lousy place but always produces well. Sits 100 yds off inside corner of plot and 50 yds shy of a 20 ac sanctuary. Saddle to my rt and east west ridge in my face. Open mature hardwood abutting thick second growth which abutts conifer bedding thicket. Do u follow? Edge on edge on edge. No deer trails seldom much sign, but they work the wind and sidehill randomly. One of my favs.
And as you can see, acorns raining like marbles this year. Deer will be fat going into winter.

Well windows 10 that got installed on my computer when it crashed is really testing my religion. But i'm going to try to update a few pics for you. Nothing real exciting yet. Its rained only twice this year. Once in March for 90 days then again in June for 120 days. It's been unreal. Good moisture but lack of sunshine has hampered crops but not as bad as last years 3 month fall drought. I'll take the rain thank you. No chance to spray grasses and have mowed plots more than ever since owning the place. As said, hard mast is abundant, soft mast decent.
Not shooting does the last couple years for reasons talked about before has really let them rebound and more bucks this year as a result getting things back to what it was 4 years ago.
Now cover you eyes, because these plots are what I do anymore. They are grass infested and I lose no sleep about it. Most are done these days with no tillage and the brassica and grains and clovers and oats are coexist just like the liberals are wanting it to be. So here goes.
Going into its 6th year, the clover chicory alfalfa plot. Deer keep it mowed, I only mow the weeds. I know you tire of seeing it, but many talk of how difficult it is to have alfalfa. See the alfalfa in the cage?? Please don't tell the deer.

IMG_0005B.jpg

And ignore those grasses. They don't hurt anything but suck up the extra N that contributes to unwanted weeds. Yes I do spray Cleth some years, but mainly mow high to keep weeds in ck. I add 0-20-20 and Boron by way of Borax each spring and sometimes fall. I overseed with WR in Sept with helps with the weeds and grasses.
Brassicas? Now this is ugly but they are doing well. Deer like them too well and as I've said, I may quit planting them. As you can see, they have already been browseing them for a month so the soil busting, late season food I want in their tubors will never have a chance to develope.
All the brassica were planted without spraying, just broadcast and mow. Deer are in it daily with signs saying Grass Lives Matter.
IMG_0009B.jpg

And you know I'm going show the Bufflalo plot. Won't bore you with the details again, but it just don't get easier than this for deer food.
IMG_0010B.jpg

No problem keeping new water hole full. These are a waste of time for me to dig. Deer give little use I guess since I have 2 ponds and 2 creeks on the place. Looks good anyways.
IMG_0007B.jpg

This is why I'd rather have an old dominate stud coyote running my place. The old one has died I think and this young one is much more random in his movements as he establishes his territory and pecking order. Perhaps one day he will be grey haired like his now gone father.

Deer do like the trophy rock. Great for doing pics. I'll move cameras to man made scrape this weekend.
Have good week everyone. Have really enjoyed everyones new land threads. Good to see fresh stuff and ideas. Never stay with a closed mind and don't believe all your told. If you think it, try it, and you just might be on to something.
One more surprise post in 2 wks and then I'll see you on the other side of the year. Enjoy your hunts and don't take anything for granted. Shoot what you want, when you want, and have no regrets. Keep it fun. Peace, my friends.

is like a vein of water flowing hidden underground,
secretly making the ground green." ---- Thomas Carlyle

Looking forward to the surprise post in 2 weeks. Sounds like you are going into hibernation after that. That's what old bears do in the winter.....;)

Been on the run last few days w family. Sneaked down for quick ck of Farm but w temps in 80s not much desire to hunt. Temps dropping to norms this week but I’ll be in the road.
Despite warm temps bucks are doing there stuff. Scrapes have opened aggressively. They hit this spot yearly. When temps drop I’ll ck some common spots along ridgetop stands.
Moved my camera to a manmade scrape but I guess a bear had made his mark into the sensor cover. Seldom have issues from them but I have a young boar this yr claiming his turf. I think he’s in for a surprise from another resident boar. Still works and will send it in for repair.

Clover a foot deep and w acorns laying like marbles across the mountains it should do well w limited browse. Nature sure plays some odd games.

Key to tree planting. Use scrub brush to protect them from browse. Deer can be lazy if they have to work for food. See how one Silky is eaten and the other not. Both planted same time within yds if each other. Looking forward to cooler weather and chance to hunt late month.

That is the exact reason that we have to have lock boxes on ALL our cameras. If not they end up looking like that, or normally even worse.

Actually after I ckd card and found no bear pic this round, I decided it was one of my infamous woodpeckers on steroids I have. Makes more sense with the damage. My bear know my scent just like the deer and have never bothered any of my stuff other than a sniff in the 9 years I have the place. Even had one sit at 20 yds and watch me change card on camera once. We have a working relationship.;)

Well the only thing I’ve killed so far is my target. Only been out the one time.
Went to my place in MB to make sure it survived Florence. No issues except fridge had thawed from 5 days no power. Only real issue w that was dang kids popsicles had thawed and melted thru fridge and across floor. Trust me cleaning up that chit is like wiping up slime. The more I cleaned the greasier it became. Thank goodness for Dawn it did the trick.
I quit whining when I realized that I could have the place covered in mud or blown away like others. I quit feeling sorry for myself then. So sorry for all and their losses. I had 2 friends lose their places. Bummer.
Anyways took it easy while the monsoons hit back home. Played golf slept and ate. A bit windy but Michael missed the beach with rain and only gave winds. Fun hitting ball in 40+ winds. The things I have to do.
Got home and the staff gave me cake and gift card today for bosses day/week/year. Pretty nice of them.
Obligations rest of wk then hopefully hunt Fri wk.
Good luck to all and make sure you are thankful for all you have. Surprise post on its way soon. Teaser.

I had already switched to 10. Yesterday my dell broke and wouldn't log on to the Ethernet so today I've got about a 9 hour day getting the new HP from China going.

Well here we go. Bet this post will catch a few off guard.
Deer first. I seldom check cameras much when hunting season starts. I like the surprise of a buck showing I've never seen. Here is the buck I've passed a few years. Two years ago he was really banged up in a fight and I didn't think he would survive the winter and the dogs, coyotes, and whatnot. He did. I had him twice last year within 15 yards of the recurve but since he was such a fighter, I let him and his 10 pt rack pass. He has put on more body and rack size this year, he might not get the pass. Pretty sure he is making some thigh size rubs by one stand. Finally start putting in some stand time this weekend.

Heavy rains, hail, some snow, 50 mph winds, yet my Goldenrod screening still stands. 6 feet of free planting much better than most anything else you can do. The deer are always jumped from the fields of this and pigweed. And some bear also. And skunk, now those I hate.
IMG_0009B.jpg

My plots follow a reverse S curve of sorts from the ridge you see in the background beginning on rt with the clover/chicory/alfalfa mix to the immediate upper of brassica/clover/grain mix, down to slope in front of same brassica mix with clover Buffalo plot to the right, to clover plot in foreground, and finally to back left out of sight a clover brassica grain mix plot in the ravine. All are surrounded with edge feathering and a soft transition of fallow growth I mow every few years. A small pond sits to my right and another distant left. My theory, and you guys know I have some crazy ones, is that deer tend to follow those fields in transition, and bucks can easily scent check all of them staying downwind and hidden in the woods. Has worked pretty well along with my other topic, Ramdom Clusters.

IMG_0013B.jpg
Hard mast crop one of the heaviest in years. Good for deer, tough on hunting as their movements are so random with food everywhere.
Found them sprouting thruout the woods. Notice all that clover amidst all that grass???? Do you realize the grass helps protect the clovers from frost and freeze thru early winter??
IMG_0016B.jpg

Now here has been my reason for being so discombobulated with the farm and hunting this year. Went to the Greenbrier and first played golf with my son on the Old White where the PGA tournament is held. Had a great time, as his schedule prevents much time together anymore.

And not deer related but....Sometimes when you finally get your act together, God chooses to give you another chance in life. I was lucky enough to have this young lady say yes to a proposal on top of a mountain wilderness this past spring and we sealed the deal alone a couple weeks ago while at the GB. You might think I''m always stressing the 3 F's of Faith, Family, and Friends because I have some amazing success in those areas in past years. Quite to the contrary, and why I stress to each of you their importance. I have certainly managed to destroy each of those in past and I can promise you that if you seek happiness in the things that the world offers you, a void will always exist within you that cannot be understood. Make sure you put your efforts in the right place.
And anyways, hunting season will begin in ernest this weekend and I hope the best of luck to all that is out there. While you sit in the woods, turn off the electronics and let your mind do its thinking undisturbed. You might be surprised at the answers that arise from between the ears. Peace my friends. And once again thanks so much for teaching me so many things about habitat management.

I hope you never quit posting your thoughts about life and living. I suspect that I'm not the only person here who needs to hear many of the things you remind us of. Wishing you all the happiness that is possible in this life we live. Congratulations on a new start and wonderful hope for the future!

Congratulations! May you both have many many years of happiness together!

Your deer woods are looking great, can't wait to see how things begin to ramp up!

Was at farm yesterday working on stands and such. Rode ATV past some pear trees I had grown from seed and planted. Looked over amidst the sage and yellow goldenrod and saw some beautiful wild flowers. My thought "now dogghr would want me to take a picture. No he would just want me to enjoy the moment".
Congrats man. May this move add much joy to the family F. May God bless. And though we have never met I feel fortunate to be a part of the other F.

Looks like a glorious day at the Greenbrier! Congrats on the beginning of a new journey down the river of life. You may not know what lays around the next bend. But...you will know who's beside you on the journey. Thx for sharing a special day!

Thanks guys.

Well thread has lived its life pretty much. Have you noticed I'm now taking pics of sprouting acorns and spreaders that look like toilets to fill space?
Always enjoy your pics and thought provoking comments.
Congrats! Best of luck with that buck too!

Thanks. I was hoping to make a run for him this Fri but of course monsoons are coming back. I'm still mowing my yard, that should be done by now.

Hard to beat a field of flowers. We do get a little strange on this forum dedicated to deer supposedly.

Now you know why I made the smart comment on your thread of your son getting married in hunting season. Who does that? He and I must be crazy. At least I preserved the prime rut weeks for me to hit.

Congratulations! May you both have many many years of happiness together!

With this warm rainy weather, you might as well stay in Hawaii. I've been surprised at how much deer are scraping and rubbing and yet still are tolerating each other quite well. Full moon and rain and warm, sounds more like golf than hunt.
