Building a land leveler

Your soil looks a lot like mine in Huntingdon county. A lot of shale but no big rocks. I've got to be careful not to till anything on more than a ten percent grade or it will give a washout and all the topsoil will wash away. Notill really works well in that kind of dirt. How many acres of plots do you have?
I got 12 acre destination plot with 6 little 1/4 to 1 acre hunting plots around my big plot which is located in the middle of my property. I am adding 3 more plots which will give me an additional 12-15 more acres. My neighbors which I over see, got about 15 acres now. our goal is to try and get to 50 acres total in the near future. I use 8' GP no-till drill with the hill assit. I picked up a CAT 314 excavator this winter so plot making should be alot easier now. Ive learned deer are just like family. "If you feed them- they will come"

I have four big fields 4-6 acres, and nine little plots, half acre average, for a total of twenty plus acres. Even with a ten foot GP drill it takes a lot of time, several days in the spring, several in the fall, so I'm thinking I'm not making any more fields. How do you get a new field started growing stuff? When I clear woods getting the first crop growing can be a challenge.

Oats or buckwheat in spring. Brassica in late summer. I coat it with lime in spring and humistart late summer. Seems to work really well.

I'm very impressed with your homemade implements. Very creative and looks well-built. I could sure use something like that on my place. We have rocks, trees and rattlesnakes.

I didn't know Arkansas had lots of rattlesnakes. Are you in the mountains or the hill country? Bill Clinton is from Arkansas right?

Well looking at improvements to plots. Mine our not smooth as I would like. Thinking of better seed contact if I get them better. Thinking of making a heavy duty 3 pt drag maybe 9’ wide with several blade maybe 6” High to take High spots and fill in low points. I built a root/rock rake which is nice but doesn’t level enough for me. I’ll post picture of it and it working. Anyone have some good input??

What did you use for the teeth on this? Are they something you bought or did you cut them all out? Its beautifully done!

I’ll dig up what I have and give it to you. How wide are you thinking? I made several.

I have a similar situation on some property that has been in my family for 7 generations in the mountains of NC. Just after Covid I had this property clear cut on the top of the mountain and we left the sides of the mountain forested. Up there I have a lot of white pine, chestnut oaks, and hemlocks. I’m in the process now of stumping with a track loader with a backhoe on it (older JD 450C).

I need to build similar attachments like you made in both the root rake and land plane. If you are interested in selling either one, I would be interested in buying them from you?
If not, I did not know if you had any plans you went by or if you just measured and welded?

I’ve looked at some of the local manufacturers around where I live and the products they have look I would break them the first use. I like how sturdy you made these you have and know the heavier the better.

Once I get my place leveled out the way we want. I have my own sawmill and have been in the process of sawing logs for a log cabin I am building on this property. The rest I’m going back in and planting white oaks. I drew this house plan myself for the log cabin I am building and made a rendering of what it will look like built.

The front of the home will have 3 dog houses with a 12’ wide wraparound porch; the back of the home is where the the peak is and will be mostly 3/4” glass in metal casing for structural integrity but allows for the best views possible. I’m making this cabin look like the log homes from the early 1800’s and am using all red oak logs. I made me a jig using 1/4 aluminum to cut the dovetails on the logs with a chain saw.

I will sell the rock rake for back of tractor, my land leveler ill keep for ever, it works on so many things other than fields, but i will help you if you want to build one your self or I could make one for you. 814-442-6771 is my cell

@Double L , some of the pics are missing. Any chance you can share some recent ones.

After you level, do you do something to remove rocks?

I have a 12' Brown Mfg Speed Mover, similar design to this 8ft. It won't handle wet soil but if the soil moisture isn't too high, I get the grade about where I want it, then raise the blade where is only skimming the high spots and leave it at that height and make circling passes until I have it as I want it. Of course, need a tractor with hydraulics.
