We got an inch or more in the mountains Friday night. A good stop to the mainly dry month of May. More rain in the 7 day forecast.

Any updates on your current drought situation? There's a sizeable system moving east out of Texas...If I don’t get rain soon I’ll lose my corn. Drought suuuuuuucks.

I only water new trees the first summer. My observation is that if newly planted bare root trees leaf out they have a good chance of making it, but if they don't, they most commonly fail in the middle of the first summer when it get's hot and dry. I always thought that not watering new trees so they root deeper is a myth, if the question is to water or not to water, you can't go wrong in watering new trees (within reason). Watering trees the second and third summer will help them grow but isn't necessary for them to survive. It's hard to believe, and it's also why I rarely complain about too much rain, but the umbrella seems to have opened up over us the past couple of weeks. Another week and I might have to begin watering the pear trees I planted at the Massey in March. A quick couple questions about watering trees: I'm pretty sure the deeper subsoil moisture is still good, we got a lot of rain in April and the first 3 weeks of May after all, and lot of them good soaking rains. When do you guys begin watering newly planted trees? I know it's good for the trees to sink roots deep to reach that water, and I'd rather not promote surface root growth until completely necessary. Also, I've always stopped watering trees 3 years after planting no matter how dry it gets, is that wise?
Don't write those beans off yet, soybeans take hot and dry weather in stride. The only thing that will doom them is if deer are grazing small plants hard during this dry spell.well since 5/29 soybean fields planting date had .15" of rain since then and 85+ degree weather every day....thinking i'll be replanting come fall, as normally we are lucky to have 5-10 days all summer that hit 90 and going to have 20+ before even get to July. eek hopefully others are getting the rainfall.
What app do you have there that shows your past rainfall?Yeah we have turned a corner around here as well. Received 9/10” a couple days ago and this is the last 24 hours around the farm.
Town 10 miles north received 7” last night and that was early in the evening who knows where they will be after the rains today.
I'm using the free version of Farm Logs. It's okay, usually close enough after I reference their radar totals with a few actual rain gauges spread around the farm. What app do you have there that shows your past rainfall?
That's a bummer. I wouldn't want to be on the Rappahannock right now with all this water.
