What to plant around a water hole

I put in a water hole a couple of years ago that is looking pathetically low right now because the water table is low. I’m thinking about broadcasting something around the edges. Jap millet or wild rice perhaps? Any other recommendations?

That's still a nice looking water hole, even if it's low. Supposedly the entire south including the southeast has been drier because we've had two La Ni·ña years in a row, but now the forecast is that the La Ni·ña is about over and hopefully a more normal rainfall year is ahead? Millet and wild rice sounds good, since you should consider any grass or reed type planting that will keep growing when partially underwater after the water hole fills up again. I don't think you want to plant anything that deer would eat, that would defeat the purpose of planting to cover the mud..
