Throw N Mow thread...

I haven’t made up close pics of this years TnM plot either, but my trail cam has made a few.

Pic of a little blue stem and assorted other grass mix on my place taken recently. Did not get a chance to get buckwheat in this spring. Does it make sense to apply glyphosate now to kill cool season grasses and then again in August after seeding? Will be spraying yuccas and some atv time may be welcomed break from that.

Here are a couple made recently. I plan on TnM’ing the during the first week or so of May. They are calling for a few more cold nights here, so I would rather wait an extra week or two for the weather to settle before I plant.

I’m assuming you have winter rye in that mix, what else is in it? At what stage can winter rye be cut and it won’t grow back? Or when you mow are you planning on having the new seed germinate along with the winter rye continue to grow?

WW, WR, WO, clover mix, PTT, and AWP. I also bought some daikon seeds, but with the little rain we had, by the time we did get rain, it was to late for the turnips and radishes. They were spotty at best. There are some weeds mixed in to, but the deer have been eating them also. I will seed and then mow. I usually let the rye, wheat, AWP, and oats go to seed and die, but I don’t feel like waiting until June to plant. I would rather get an extra month of growth and rain. We tend to get dry mid June to August most years, so I want to try a different tactic than I have been. I have never mowed my winter plots in May, before seed heads are starting to show. It may bite me in the butt, but that is how we learn. I may go in and spray a grass killer(cleth?) to save the clover and let my new plot come up as it wants.

I will be planting this mix this year. I was going to plant it last year and the landowner was having work done to the field and I only had the chance to plant the fall plot. I have high hopes for this mix.

Hutchison Forage soybeans
Iron Clay Cowpeas
Buckwheat
Sorghum Sudan
Black oil Sunflower
Safflower
Chicory

I'd let it grow. Spraying things dead without anything else being planted will lead to a loss of organic matter.

My throw and mows did quite well from last fall. Kept up with the disked areas my father and uncle insisted on, they are coming over to the light as it is “less work”.

Still need more food, which they agree as well...I’ll check back when I have some pictures from our Spring/Summer throw n mow.

Side note : the power line company made a mess we had to clean up, and needed to use our box blade to clean up since we don’t have a rake...gives me more area to plant though

Nice Work^^^^^^!! also a great argument for an exclusion cage as seen in top pic

Results will keep getting better and better if you stick with it

My father didn’t send the clearest of pictures, but here is our highline that the electric company did their work. We are seeing growth, but hard to pick out individual species in the pictures. Mostly throw n mow after clean up (see my post above showing the fun from last month)

Also, this was a throw n mow plot with some clover frost seeding. Not sure if/when we should mow the rye down - we do have some beardless wheat and oats still mixed in.

Looks really good. I think I'd just let that one ride and see what it looks like later, especially with a possible drought.

I have a rye/crimson clover field I’m going to throw and mow. Do I need to spray it first or just throw and mow.

Do I need to add more winter rye seed or will I get the seed from the existing plants to grow?

Its a bit early to plant winter rye, September 1 st is a good date. Rye is a prolific reseeder if you give it the right conditions. Let it stand until most of the seed has fallen off the heads then disk one time, like mid August. No need to spray unless you have weeds that you want to get rid of. But clover needs mowed really short for a throw and mow to work.

I’m not doing a throw and mow yet, I figured early to mid August. It will be a mix again. I just wasn’t sure if I should order more winter rye seed for this plot and if I should spray it before I throw. If I should spray I would have to spray in the next week or so to make sure I got a good kill or make sure I had enough time to spot spray.

Plot looks good. I wouldn't spray unless like MM said, you have heavy weed issues. You can just spray few days before if you want.
Now to keep thatch from being too thick, I will sometimes mow the grain half its height early July. Then at planting I'll seed, then mow shorter or roll grain. Too much thatch is almost worse than too little.
Clover looks good, you could just let it be a clover plot.
But I would spread grain again, too much never hurts in early plots.

I did two throw and mow plots today with the expected storms heading my way. Last year was the first time I ever did throw and mow, into a buckwheat stand. This is the first time I’m doing a throw and mow into a previous years plot. Field one was winter rye, crimson clover, volunteer white clover and some weeds. The total area is .7 acre. I broadcasted Winfred brassica, 5 pounds. 7 pounds of buckwheat and 7 pounds of sunflowers. After mowing I sprayed the undergrowth with gly. 474B32F4-3257-473B-867D-E50E2A706DDC.jpeg
The second field I broadcasted into was a pure stand of WR, 1 acre, there was a lot of white clover that was huge. I’m not sure where it came from but if I was showing someone the field I would have taken credit for it.

I broadcasted 25 pounds of assorted soybean seeds, 5 pounds of Winfred brassica, 10 pounds of sunflowers and buckwheat. After mowing I also sprayed this field. Time will tell if it worked. If not I have plenty of rye, wheat, and daikon radish to try again. 42E15A06-DB5D-4E1C-AE2D-854CABE8E822.jpeg

It’s crazy how much earlier you guys throw brassicas up that way! We rarely get our first frost before November down here.

Ive never planted them this early but MM and Elkaddict have had great success with it so that’s enough to sell me. I trust pretty much everyone on this site over anything I see on the Facebook groups.

I plan on prepping another two acres for Daikon radish and some other stuff in the next week or so. One acre is fallow and the other is buckwheat that the deer hammered and it’s only 4-6 inches tall. This should outpace my deer if it grows. I hope to have them in the ground by the end of the month or early August.

I’m up to roughly 7 acres of food plots which is a lot to handle but the throw and mow has really taken some pressure off.

The clover survived the gly spraying. And it just finished down pouring, that’s why the soybean seed is under water. But for a weeks worth of growth and plenty of rain I’m very pleased with the results so far.

It looks like some winter rye germinated from the seed heads. But besides that everything looks great.
