The Massey

We'll see if this provides any good pics the next couple of weeks. In years past, for the money, alfalfa has been much better than corn for getting pics over time.

I'm interested in seeing if you get any deer coming in. We tried alfalfa hay bales years ago when we had deep snows, and the deer turned up their nose at our offerings.

Our deer tend to change from year to year; but this is last year. One detail that might skew things this year is the number of still viable acorns that are yet on the ground. There are still thousands of them.

Well, tweedle Dee and Dumb are the two biggest hitters of the alfalfa so far. Putting it in the cover as opposed to putting it by the lower barn plot last year might have something to do with that. The deer seemed leery of it for a while. I still hoping more deer begin hitting it sometime, but there’s so much food still in the form of acorns, it just might not happen like I’d hoped.

The deer are routinely hitting the hay now. The groups never stay more than 15 minutes, and rarely show up more than once or twice in a 24 hour period. Big bodied shed bucks are showing up as well.

From our little survey hay pile, I’d say about 80% of the bucks have now shed. This young fella shed his left side in the last 12 hours. His drop should be somewhere close.

If we get the storm most of the weather guys are predicting in the next couple of days and the temps too, I’m guessing those still holding on will drop as well. Been getting firewood cut and arranged the last couple days.

If it gets as cold as they say, I may "drop" if I have to be outside. :)

Been doing the same thing with firewood. Brought a bunch inside late last week and still have a truckbed full of it. Will bring as much in tonight as I can, then try to park under the lean-to to keep the rest dry. I'm hopeful we don't have any power outages or anything like that. My family should be ok but there are plenty of people out there that would struggle without electricity.

When it gets really cold, there's nothing that compares to good old fashioned wood heat.

Yes sir! We have a heat pump. It's pretty cheap to run but the air is warm instead of hot when it comes out. That hedge puts out a heat that's like eating homemade chicken and noodle soup. Good stuff! Good luck to ya for the next couple of days.

Snow is beginning to come down pretty good. When it comes to accumulation, they’re still saying from 6-18”. We’ll see what happens. I hope I have enough wood stocked up in the chicken shed. Girls are out of school the next couple days, doing virtual right now.

Cold! Every time I go out to do something I'm surprised at the bite. I'd bet we don't end up getting more than 5 inches.
