The great value of topworking

Wow, what great success. I was helping my son with a hundred acres of timber in NE Kansas that had a lot of Callery pear. I flagged a few that I wanted to try grafting and killed the rest. Situation changed and he sold the land before I got to try grafting. Back home in SW Kansas( annual rainfall 17.50", 7.5 pH) we don't have the problem with the invasive Callery pear, so doubt that I will ever get to try grafting. I have no soft mast here now but would like to get some going. There is an old pear tree at a long ago abandoned farmstead that I would like to get a start from, via seed or grafting to some rootstock.

Well, I got a VERY unpleasant surprise at the Massey yesterday. I’m such an idiot; in all of my maintenance to stabilize the graft on my first callery pear attempt, I NEVER thought to reinforce the tape on the trunk. 👎👎👎
Please learn from my mistake, a year of growth down the drain, and this year would have been amazing with all the rain we’ve received.
