Past due for my biannual update. Drilled 16 acres of soybeans mid may. Due to lack of rain, total failure on all but 4 acres in some deeper soil, may have to replant it into wheat or rye due to the deer consuming most of it. It has kept the deer fed so far this summer, starting to get a little rain so hoping it will rebound. Since most of the beans were gone I took the opportunity to get some lime down and disked in 18ac, top dressed the rest. Had 3 end dumps, around 70 tons delivered and rented a spreader, limed 25 acres. Now that we've got a little rain I'll be planting 3 acres of turnip, radish, kale and rape mix in two plots this week. I was impressed with the two acres of wheat I put in last fall, after it headed and dried down it fed the deer until late June. I'll be planting 13 acres in wheat /rc the 2nd week in Sept to see how far into summer it will last, I'll be planting only 5ac in rye/rc on a couple new plots. Our perennial clover plots have been mia
most of the summer, just lately starting to green up. Same clover plot, late May/ early Aug, different angle.
Finally finished the frontage fence & entrance, still have to grade and pave from the road past the gate 20 feet or so. We do directional drilling so my son's used some spent tri-cone heads for post caps at the entrance. Started getting some pipe corner & gate posts set for interior barbed wire fence, my neighbor will lease some land for his cattle. The deer pic was taken out the house window.
Hogs started showing up en masse in June. I got the trap set up and dropped on 28, picked off one here and there until they decided there were safer places to hang out. Trapped 32 total before taking the trap out. Just a random hog pic now and then since.
Managed to get the boat out and take my long time friend/hunting partner Jerry and his brother, visiting from SW Texas hybrid striper fishing, had a great day on the water. Jerry is battling prostate cancer and been through a couple chemo treatments and surgeries. Hard watching a friend and his family suffering.
