Swamp white vs white oak vs red oak

Does anyone know what extremes that oaks won't tolerate? I have absolutely no naturally occurring oaks around me for miles, and I can't figure out why. The soil is a well drained sandy loam with a natural PH of around 5.5. I've planted a few oaks in the past couple of years and they seem to be doing fine. Maples grow very well here if that helps.

North Central Reforestation in MN sells bare root and containerized oaks. They have bur oak that come from Central / Western Minnesota that is near the same latitude as the UP and is in a similar USDA zone. Bur oak are supposed to be the generalists of all the oaks. I have read that they're associated with limestone soils in Wisconsin. Not sure how far north that applies.

See the bottom of the page.

I spoke with them on the phone this summer. The nursery manager was really helpful.
