Shopping for an AR

I have an AR that you can have (if I could get it to you I would). Our Liberal government just banned all AR's & variants and made them prohibited guns with a stroke of a pen. We have no clue if they will offer a buyback or just require us to hand them in for destruction. Anyone that legally owns one cannot so much as take it out of the house - cannot shoot it at the range, cannot transport it anywhere, or sell/transfer it.

These were restricted firearms so the gov't knows who own them so there is no hiding.

Where is this? That sucks!

From what I understand there are or will be many other firearms restricted in Canada. I have a friend who lives in Ontario who is really concerned about the restrictions. He has some expensive firearms that either are on or may be on a restricted list including shotguns.

Wow. Horrible for your society. Any way you could move to US? We need more gun owners here that value freedom.
I think we’ll have the same restrictions applied here within 2-3 years though, so it may not be worth the hassle.

Should run me about $600 for the entire kit and then another $100 for the stripped lower. Should end up with a gun for under $800 that would typically sell for over a grand. My local store has ARR556 ruger for $750...on the shelf. Biggest issue around here is ammo being available.

I think PSA makes a decent product and has come a long ways in the past 5 years. You should be able find a lower for less. I have one of their lowers and it has been great, bought it in 2011. A buddy has a .300blk pistol upper and it has been flawless.

I have both a Ruger AR556 and a Palmetto Armory AR in 300 blackout. I have no complaints on either one.

What sort of things should I be looking at to ensure I am getting a VERY reliable and robust firearm. I am fairly unfamiliar with AR platforms. I am thinking something in the $500 to $750 price range should get me something decent.

I had this 350 Legend built by them. Very competitive for pricing and usually cheaper than anywhere else. They are at least 4-6 weeks out right now on builds, because word has spread about them.

The stripped lower is actually $80.
The uppper assembly in 5.56 and lower kit (100% complete less magazine and lower stripped receiver) is $600.

I have heard a lot of great things about the 300blk for deer hunting. I may look into that later.....

I like putting lowers together, kinda relaxing. I will tell you to get some masking tape(painters tape) and place it anywhere there is a pin that needs to be driven in(bolt catch). It helps keep scratches away.

I talked to the guy who is doing my FFL transfer and he has offered to let me bring everything to his shop and he will help me assemble it if I want. I think I may take him up on the offer as he will have the tools and far more experience than I or even the help I do have. I think me putting it together will be a good learning experience for me as well. I am open to any other tips or tricks you may have as well.

On a similar but different topic.....what different calibers can I get on an AR15 platform? I'm not interested in the odd or wildcat rounds....just may FINALLY listen to Cat and actually get an upper for deer hunting.....here it has to be .243 caliber or bigger.

With your flat farmland country, I wouldn't go with a short range caliber. I'm not especially crazy about a 243 for deer, but it is capable of reaching out there for a long range shot with good bullet placement and the right ammo. The recoil is also manageable for kids the age of yours. That's what I would choose. A good accurate 243 is also the cat's meow for a long range coyote/varmint gun.

I don’t stake my castle nut. I torq it with an application of blue loctite, it holds it. Nothing against staking, I’ve changed things along way, playing and not having it staked let me find what I liked. You’ll upgrade a few times, whether it’s part or optics along the way.

We use lithium bearing grease for our barrel nut, needs to be torqued at least twice(I like 3x).

Don’t dry fire with the upper removed, without your thumb on top of the hammer. You or he will test the safety function after installing the trigger group. *Of course you can dry fire with the upper installed.

I grease just about everything internally. I use a good gun grease, although some people use bearing grease. Gun grease stays in place better.

You’ve already bought it but, I like milspec buffer tubes. They tend to be easier to find along with stocks. Commercial is fine and will hold up to what we do as hobbiest from hunting to firearms and tactics training. It’s just a different diameter buffer tube.

Just enjoy the build and ask questions. You’ll build the next one with out help.

This is my 2 stamp rifle. Picked up the silencer August 31. Still experimenting with ammo, but will hunt with either 110gr Barnes TAC-TX or the Hornady 110gr V-Max. Both should be accurate, as everything I have tried has made good groups at 50yds and decent groups at 100.
