Pa Hillbilly Farming

It can be seen that the tines are shortish definitely; But for a deer to survive to maturity such as this one he does have qualities that are great to have -survival know how. I'd take him here but not as a cull buck but as a great deer that has survived many seasons in a heavily hunted state. Any of us be proud to see deer on his/her property reach that age. He is shootable for sure but not as a cull but a special deer. Best of luck to you in harvesting him.
Very good point. sometimes I cant see trees because of the forest...turkey season opens Saturday here, I am hoping with the turkey hunters chase them in my area that some some the area bucks seek refuge at the DLL and decide to check out the ladies and the buffet and living conditions.I might have to work this weekend so that may be a blessing in disgise. That is just one more day my place is not disturbed.

Well life has been busy so I haven’t been on here lately. Had a few does taken so far this year between bow and early muzzleloader season. Two bears. One I shot last day of bow/bear. It was a small nuisance bear hanging around the cabin. Been trying not to pressure my property as I have close to 12 100-125” bucks living on the property. My big 10 pt I hunted last two years has been on other neighbors property which had been clear cut 2 years ago has really blew up

. I missed a 180” class buck bow hunting in Ohio last week. Arrow hit vine I didn’t see. Yesterday my New to me D6 finally got delivered so I’m thinking about more habitat improvements

Thats quite a lineup of up and comers. Can't imagine the feelings of seeing a 180 with a bow in hand. Must of been a rush. Looks like your on the right track to growing one right here in PA and I think you will.
Wow, a D6! Thats some serious equipment you got there. I gues your adding more plots?

seeing that size deer was worth the trip for sure. he came back and was at 24 yards but could not get a clear shot. I have 6 acre trees cut and started pulling stumps. so ill start pushing that clearing and come spring I got lots of plans for more plots. Since having the bigger equipment now, making plots seems to be alot easier now..

well first day of rifle season 8 bucks seen. No shooters. Thought I would share this photo of the shadow of the buck looking at the hill side, I think it is pretty neat.

watched this 10 pt for 2 hr while I was gonna shot a doe with the muzzleloader. Figured I’ll wait till Saturday to thin out the does, so I don’t scare of the bucks and make them leave the property. Had 5 bucks last two nights out feeding. Cutting back on corn next year and planting more soybean instead. Wifey and I then had dinner over the fire. "Hillbilly living at its best". Lol

helped one my friends this summer to shoot longer for a out west hunt. Got his first kill at 530 yards. We had great time. Without getting any big bucks I can still have a great time harvesting doe.

Whether it is a 530 yard shot which is just incredible or a perfect 18 yard shot sitting on the ground with no blind on the edge of a high stem count drainage area though they are such different doe hunts, they are very, very exciting to the "watcher" as well as to the successful hunter. Both hunts though at opposite ends of the spectrum each take over the top patience and timing to pull off perfectly. Congratulations to you and your friend on a successful hunt and a clean one shot kill at such an extraordinary range.

Thank you Chainsaw. Spoken so very true. Had to work late yesterday so I didn’t get a chance to run to cabin to harvest any more doe. Today gonna be a busy day. I got some kids and friends coming to try and get their doe. I decided to help things into their favor a little so I loaded up some shells for the creedmoor with the suppressor on it. It’s the easiest shooting rifle I got so 50-800 yards we should be good. I’ll keep you all updated on how we make out. Last Saturday is definitely doe day.

Happy to see another passionate reloader. It’s so satisfying to find a perfect load and the confidence it creates. My present favorite long range rifles are a 270WSM, 7mmSTW, 300Wby and 340Wby. Longest shots on deer, elk and antelope have been with the Weatherbys. However, I’m really excited with the performance of the 270WSM. It shoots fast/flat but recoil, even out of a light weight gun, is soft enough that you can regularly watch impact. I’m not recoil sensitive, but the boomers sometimes don’t come out of recoil quick enough to see the moment of impact. Of course, with the boomers, there’s not much to see but a DRT face plant:)

1 doe down so far. Has these two bucks walking around. Got some girls coming later from our local high school rifle team. Hopefully we can get them onto some good deer. I guess this is a perk of having a doe farm apparently. Lol. This doe management is so much fun.

Agree with you on the reloading and with all that goes into long range shooting. My go to gun has been the 6.5 creedmoor mostly because that is what I shoot the most and have the most confidence in. Plus with the supressor it is pleasant to shoot and no recoil. I've been trying to shoot my long range muzzleloader some to get better with judging the wind, but 45 caliber 325 grain at 2850 fps it rocks you a little, so no point of impact being seen with that club.LOL

For a desk jockey like me, diesel therapy is indispensable. I remember as a kid watching my dad dig holes and ditches only to refill them. As kids we secretly mocked his stupid use of time. I now get it. You can’t imagine how frequently I find an excuse to fire up the MF and use the FEL for chores....

Would be hard to not take diesel therapy every day if that iron was on my property:D.

Most people think Im crazy when they hear I am doing work at the cabin for relaxation. They have no idea what it takes to get away from the daily aggravation and stress of the day. I would rather take a wire brush to my arm pit than sit in front of a tv. I am more excited to be doing some work in the woods than going hunting now. Plus this new plot actually may have some soil on it. This will be something new for me since Im used to dealing with the rocky plots that I have.. LOL
