One Straw Farm

Got out to the farm today and started slabbing this oak. You can see from the marestail I meant to get this done six weeks ago. I would really like to have a Woodmizer but can’t quite justify it yet. Even with a sharp ripping chain it’s a slow way to get there but it’s cheap. I’m not that fond of my ms271 so figured I’d see if I could work it to death. It outlasted me today.

Summer mix is coming along pretty decent too for the lack of rain. We got some rain this weekend, thankful for that, should help things along. Between the wet spring late planting and a very dry July we just can’t win this year. Still don’t know how farmers do it.

We had one of the wettest springs on record this year. I have very light soil and a high water table so I knew I would probably lose a lot of the nitrogen that the previous years beans had fixed. I try to keep synthetic inputs to a minimum so I decided to see how the summer mix would do without fertilizer. All the rain really robbed the nitrogen. You can see how light green the mix is on the left. On the right I added late fert to see the difference in biomass. May not be the best test as the mix that got fertilized is closest to the tree line and gets browsed harderIMG_0827.JPG

I like comparisons such as this on fertilizer vs no fertilizer. it does look like the fert made a difference.

I’m converting this area to a perennial clover field. I’d prefer to no till but figured since it’s going to be a long term clover field I’d disk it. Planted with WR for nurse crop. Disked, spread and cultipacked on Sunday 8/11.

I have a new invader this year, yellow nutsedge from what I gather. Never had it on the property and don’t have any experience with it. I know people intentionally plant it for turkeys. How bad is it as an invasive? I understand that the normal herbicides won’t work on this sedge and that it mainly spreads from rhizomes. What have you guys found to be the best way to control it if you’ve gone down that road.
