Dbltree seed mix and rotation
Plant ALL in one plot in strips or blocks

Alice, Kopu II, Durana (or comparable) white clover 10% of plot, sow at 6#'s per acre with the rye combination in the fall or in the spring with oats and berseem clover. Correct Ph and P&K with soil tests

Brassicas in 45% of plot

Purple Top Turnips 3#
Dwarf Essex Rape 2#
GroundHog Forage radish 5#

Plant in mid to late July in most Midwest states, or 60-90 days before your first killing frost, Use 200#'s of 46-0-0 urea and 400#'s of 6-28-28 per acre. Follow the dead brassicas with oats and berseem or crimson clover in mid spring at 60#'s oats and 12-15#'s berseem clover and/or crimson and/or 50#'s of chickling vetch)

Cereal Grain combo in 45% of plot...we use 50# each rye, oats and peas along with radish and clover seed all planted in half of each feeding area

Winter rye 50-80#'s per acre (56#'s = a bushel)
Spring oats 50-120#'s per acre (32#'s = a bushel)
Frostmaster Winter Peas or 4010/6040 Forage peas 20-80#'s per acre

Red Clover 8-12#'s per acre or white clover at 6#'s per acre (or 20-40 pounds hairy vetch and 20-30#'s crimson clover on sandy soils)
Groundhog Forage Radish 5#'s per acre

Plant in late August to early September, if following well fertilized brassicas use 100 - 200#'s of urea, if starting a new plot add 400#'s of 6-28-28 but for best results soil test and add only what is necessary.

Rotate the brassicas and rye combo each year

In memory of LC and what he unselfishly shared with us for a foundation of a solid, year round food plot strategy.

I know LC's threads are posted on other forums, but it creates a sense of continuity, seeing this not only as a sticky, but having it's very own sub-forum. A fitting tribute.

P.S. - It might be smart to lock this thread, to keep it from getting cluttered. The message Dan posted is perfect...any questions could be discussed in other threads.

To me, Lickcreeks knowledge was the light switch that I needed to push me into QDM. So glad to see this on here, as I have directed dozens of friends to read some LC threads on the old forum, and now we have it here.

This is the foundation of LC's food plot structure and I copied and pasted from one of his later posts. He shared so much and within this small portion expanded into multiple threads. While I never did get to Meet LC we did share a few messages back and fourth. He was always eager to help and I found a common characteristic between the two of us. While I may not have the knowledge base of LC as I continue there is hardly a good plot I plant that I don't wonder how LC would have done differently. He was a Christian and his faith was definitely interwoven with his passion for deer.

Anyone know of a good pre-mixed Paul Knox type blend? Trying to get seeds together for this fall and I can't find a pick and choose kind of online source without getting to $80 plus shipping for 1/3 of an acre.... I just feel that 100 bucks is pretty pricey for that small of an area.

There are three different Paul Knox, aka "Lick Creek" or "LC" blends...a fall rye mix, summer brassica mix, and a spring oats/clover mix. Most folks are referring to the fall rye mix, when they reference Paul and the work he did in coming up with great food plot blends.

The thing is, you don't want to mix all of that seed together. You could mix the oats, rye and peas, with a light discing to get a little dirt on them, but you can't do that to the clover or chicory (I always throw that in for drought tolerance). On 1/3 of an acre, I'd either find someone to go in on seed with or locate a coop that will order the stuff for ya.

Paul not only had the food plots down pat, but he also knew more about native grasses than anyone I have ever found. I came across his NWSG threads by searching the Internet and couldn't stop reading them, because what he was accomplishing was exactly what I wanted to do. Anyone who wants to establish NWSGs shouldn't start before they read all of his information. He loved tall cover that stood up during the winter, and he showed pictures of what worked and what didn't work. He also went deeper into the various cultivars within the different species, which is hard to find anywhere else. I'm grateful for all of his good information and his example he set for everyone.

Ikeman, I don't know if you have looked at Justin Seed Company in Justin, Texas. They have a fall grains mix that i purchased last year that is pretty close to Paul's mix - it has Wheat, Rye, Oats, Turnips and Winter Peas at 50 lb for $19. The only downside is no clovers in this mix. They do have one with Clovers and Alfalfa for $32 per 50 lbs. I also ordered seed from Hancock Seeds out of Florida this spring and thought shipping cost wasn't too bad.

I have heard it mentioned before, but was not aware that they had decent mixes. I may do 50lbs of that and toss a little clover in to finish it off.

Great info here, I read it every year about this time. Anybody who uses a GP or other drill should post the drill settings they are using. I'd like to compare and learn. I'll post mine when I get to my drill journal at the farm.

Well I did some LC brassica mix today. Mixed 5# GHR, 3# PTT, and 3# DER. Used 8-9# in the small box on #45, set with the openers all the way shallow and covered 1.6 acres. So with the small box on 45 it put down about 6# / acre. A little lighter than LC and I wanted, but we'll see how it goes. With a drill, you can usually get by with a little less. I bumped it up to 48 and my wife did another small patch, I'll watch and see how it turns out.

Picture from my family's use of the Justin Seed Cereal grains mix which is very close to LC's, we are needing rain, but my uncle is watering this part of the plot, we didn't mean to "row" the plot, we broke the tiller and only had half the blades working

With my great plains 1006nt drill I've got to go down to 30 on the small box to plant the LC brassica seed at 10 lb per acre. 5# GHR, 3# PTT, and 2# DER.
To drill the peas and small grain mix I set the large box at gear 2, seed cup 2, setting 60.

Bump for hat tip to LC never read his stuff before.
Can someone further explain this 45% of the plot:
"Cereal Grain combo in 45% of plot...we use 50# each rye, oats and peas along with radish and clover seed all planted in half of each feeding area"

The ".....all planted in half of each feeding area" is confusing to me..
So strip food plot:
10% in white Clover
45% brassicas
45% combo but half of that in radish/clover?

The white perennial clover goes around the perimeter. Plant the rest of the plot in blocks or strips. Half of those with the brassica mix and half with the cereal combo.( annual clover and radish). He believed in the strip/block method to keep the deer moving through the plot. If you just plant either a single crop or a combo plot then the deer tend to just use the edges. Get them to move through the plot. In my opinion the LC methodi is the gold standard. I’ve used it exclusively with high success. Many people try and tweak it. There is no need . Keep it simple, and he would tell you that.
