Kentucky Public Land Tips

I’m out of eastern Ohio and I’m looking to plan a diy public land trip to Kentucky for the 2019-20. Just wanted to know if anybody has any tips for places that have good deer density in north/northeast Kentucky. Thanks!!

Not exactly where you wanted geographically in Ky but this may help ya. I went to Green River Lake wma (about 20,000 acres) back in 2005. Back then it was bow only with a 15 inch minimum spread. From what I read it sounds like Ky has just continued to improve their herd.
I went the first week of Nov. I believe they had a managed gun hunt the following week. Ky was a one buck state back then and believe they still are.
Its kinda rolling hills, some flat areas, small mountains....a good mix. Lots of nearby ag. We saw some decent bucks (130/140") and one really nice one that we hunted hard, probably too hard. Unfortunately we never connected. Plenty of deer there, pretty much saw deer every sit.
The one link says the pressure is high to moderate. We didn't find that the case at all. Ran into very few hunters.

If I can help any more just ask. Good luck!

This is where we stayed. We rented a cottage on the lake that was really nice.

Thanks man I appreciate it, I’m gonna start checking it out on maps now to try to narrow down a good place to start on the property.

If you're new to public land hunting, or just want to become a better hunter in general, join the Hunting Beast forum. Try to determine what features the land you're going to be hunting has (hills, swamps, marsh, farms) and then buy the corresponding DVD that Dan Infalt has put out. Watch it 5 times, and then start scouting. His tactics for public land are becoming very popular and are being used and referenced daily. They might be too aggressive for limited acreage private land, but for large pieces of public land they have proven successful.

Thank you, I tried to make an account with them a few weeks ago and I’m still waiting for it to be approved. I’m gonna figure out the terrain features I’ll be in then I’ll order the dvd right away.

Too hot out (for me anyway) to scout right now, so I'm watching the hill country DVD again and then going to do some topo map cyber scouting. There is a small (<300 acre) piece of public property I just found online that looks good on a map. I've located the areas where I think the bucks will bed on a topo map, and I'll go confirm that when the weather breaks.

Awesome man, I’m still learning up on how to read maps for buck bedding, is that covered in the videos?

It is covered extensively in this video by the "Blood Brothers":

It would be worth it (to me) just to learn how to read a topo map. THE most informative hunting video I had ever seen.

Dan Infalt also has developed his own series of Hunting Beast DVDs that touch on Swamp, Marsh and Hill Country. A video on Farm Country is set to be released at some point this summer (I can't wait!). I hate to sound like a fanboy, but these are all information packed, how-to videos. A lot of this information can be found on the hunting beast forum (including how to read topos), and Dan puts out a lot of Youtube videos, but the DVDs just concentrate the information so well that the first time I was literally taking notes.
