Kaleo Hills-Property tour

Not a single black bear trail camera picture until it's time for the fawns to start dropping. Think they're keyed in or just a coincidence?

I just returned from a week at the property and was able to get a lot done just ahead of the hurricane. Florence is dumping a few inches of rain in the mountains as I type. Seems like perfect timing with the 420+ pounds of seed and 800 pounds of lime added to the roads and new plot; just hoping it's not too much rain!

On this trip I had a dozer and trackhoe repair 1200 yards of logging roads and clear a .6 acre food plot. When I wasn't spreading lime and seed I managed to squeeze in a few hunts.

Interesting surprise on night one. This little bear was crossing the state rd between my property parcels the evening before the archery deer opener.

Lots of deer food in the recently logged areas. For some reason jewel weed is everywhere on our place. I think it's in close running with poke weed for deer preference, it's browsed heavily.

I snuck in a few hours fishing on a nearby creek. First trip to this spot, it’s loaded with fat little rainbows.

Another great sit Monday morning. This spot should be great during the rut. Two primary ridges intersect and make a great pinch point. A large chestnut oak was raining large acorns 30 yards from me, that tree was responsible for most of the deer sightings. I saw around 10 does and fawns in two hours.

This doe offered a 7 yard broadside shot but her fawn is still young, I elected to pass.

The “bait”. The natural stuff is the best. I sat on a few white oaks in addition to this chestnut oak. All had deer under them. Early season can be great if you have a few white oaks dropping!

Road and plot work began Monday. This is a small section of new road that runs closer to my border. I’d eventually like a complete perimeter road but the terrain won’t allow it. I’ll get as close as possible though.

Plot in progress. This area was timbered 1-2 years ago. I had them leave the large stumps to save time and money. They’ll give me something to do in a few years.

I snuck in s few hunts here and there. This was the second hunt near a very large white oak. On the first sit they blew me out at first light. I did see a bear that morning.

On this morning I watched several does, fawns and a young 4pt. There was no wind and the thermals did give me away a few times. Luckily there were no overreactions.

More natural “bait”.

Eventually a single doe made her way into easy bow range. I didn’t see a fawn with her so I decided to take the shot.

This is my first Whitetail with a bow unless you count Coues’ deer. Most of my hunting has taken place west of the Rockies in the past 12 years.

She’s also my first animal off our new property. Pretty great feeling.

October 2017 planted Chestnut trees are looking good. Purchased as 7-gallon trees then transferred to 10 gallon Rootmaker’s for a few months prior to planting.

Spring planted apples from NWC looking great. It’s been a record year for rain.

A finished plot. It's basically "roughed-in" at this point. Plenty of structure from stumps, roots and sticks but it's a start! This is the largest plot for miles.

800 pounds of pellet lime and more seed than I care to admit on a public forum. Something tells me Florence will not allow all that seed to stay put.

Another angle, looking back up the hill towards the place I was standing when I took the first picture.

One of my favorite trail cam pictures. No NC giants on my cameras so far but it’s great to see some young bucks around.

You've been busy as usual. And what a great deal to get to hunt and fish and take a great doe. Really cool stuff. We could almost spit on each other across the mountain based on you location. Can't beat that kind of land. Congrats.
