Geo in Co

Well congrats Geo. You said it wouldn't take you long to clean it up! So new thread Geo in ........

I remember something in the pics of that holler that lots of people didn't notice - a patch of jewelweed. So he is starting out with one of the best late summer food plots in the world. So, all is not bad!

Jewel weed is a jewel here as well Native. There is a bed of it 60 yards in from the 40 acre alfalfa field bordering us. During bow season which is now the jewel weed gets hit every afternoon a full two hours before they dare venture out into the alfalfa field. And the drier everything else is the more they hit the jewel weed. I'll bet Geo got excited when he saw the jewel weed.

Dave, unlike some weeds, deer use of Jewel weed seems to be universal. Now that I've said that, someone will probably say they don't use it on their place...LOL.

Yes, I noticed the jewels. Had a deer verbally berating me the first morning that I was there and figured that it was because I was intruding upon his or hers jewel weed patch.

Last year at this time I found elk much closer to home than where I had been looking for them.

Opening day rifle today and I was up on the hill side by dawn. I missed the water hole on the way up by about 80 yards.

I found it on the way back down.

On the way out I cut the tracks of a small herd that cut my track made on my way in, heading up towards the water hole. I know this because I found kicked up dirt clods on top of my track.

So I had a decent plan, I just missed seeing some elk.

I got up there this morning before sunrise but about the time the elk were already moving thru and up. I crossed paths with a young bull that didn't trip my trigger at about 75 yards. Had another bull bugling about 100 yards to my east. If he responded to my cow call it was the wrong response. I went in with just my gun, knife, license, cow call, and camera but not my grunt tube.

Come on George, get that elk down. Won't be long and you'll be stuck shooting big ass whitetails.

I'm about over the elk hunting thing.

I was on top of the ridge above the water hole this morning, hear no elk, see no elk.

My still hunt worked pretty good on this trio of photogenic mule deer.

Keep at it Geo; You are close, any day now or even any second now! Give it all you have; it's within your reach. Giant elks, look out!

No elk, but what a wonderful place to enjoy a hunt.
Good luck G!

Thanks guys. Sorry to say Dave but I completely whimped out the last day of my elk season.

I was out this morning for a buck mule deer, with a steady, brisk wind I didn't see a deer. I did see another hunter numb nuttin through where the deer like to bed.

Geo, none of us win every day but you do get your share of winning days and not by luck.

I'm about ready for one of them winning days.

Went to the ridge where I found some old sign on Wednesday and

didn't see a deer. Yesterday morning

I went out to catch some moon beams. In the next couple of weeks deer will start moving but not this week.
