Geo in Co

Another day, another dollar

I fished the same Parachute Adams up through some nice holes with no takers.

Then there were takers everywhere.

Lots of hits but no hooks in my make it or break it hole from the last visit.

The fish became more aggressive when the daily monsoon hit. A 20 fish day, 2-10" brookies in the pan.

I got a good lead on some blue-winged olives #14s parachute.

The same guy tipped me off to the shooting range.

I shot and cleaned a dozen at 100yds while adjusting the scope. My first actual 3 shot group was 1/2", Hornady 168 gr ELD Match.

Back to Hornady 7/8".

200 yards really exposed my unsteady Workmate shooting bench, my heart beat shifted the point of impact left and right 2" from center while I was trying to shoot. Hornady's

The Federals shot a similar 5 1/2" group at 200. The Barnes flared out to 8".

I like my new rifle, .308 is a very mild load to shoot and I'm pretty confident that with a steady bench and Hornady ammo it will shoot sub MOA all day.

For deer I'd look at some 165 g Interbonds. My 308 (and 06) also likes hornady's. SST's shoot really well too but I have not tried them out on deer yet.

I've got a box of the Hornady ELD-X coming in 178gr which because of the ELD has the similar down range ballistics as the 165gr with the match grade accuracy. The ELD-X uses the interlock design. Thanks

Geo, you're having too much fun! What kinds of trout are you catching? I can't ID either fish, they look close to Brook Trout, but no..

Hi Brad, mostly catching brook, some native cutthroat, and a few rainbows. The first photo was a brook, the second I believe to be a cut. The brook in the picture looks more like a northern pike to me, it had brook trout vermiculation's.

There's not enough time in the day for all of the fun I'm having. A dentist appointment and work today, fish tomorrow.

Hard to tell who is having the most fun - you or Hank.

Looks like you are on to something with the Hornady.

Thanks for the updates - enjoyed them.

That first fish has the markings of a Lake Trout, but is no doubt a brook. Out West there are many species of trout that I have never seen, and the color and markings of Brook Trout vary from stream to stream

Brook Trout tend to vary in color from stream to stream. I know a stream where they're black and another stream where they're silver. The Brook Trout in the first pic has markings similar to a Lake Trout.

Those are beautiful trout streams, and I can't think of a better place to be!

Hi Steve, Hank gets to go tomorrow.

Savage and Hornady seem to go hand in hand.

This one came out of the same creek, later in the year ready for sex.

Mmmm those last couple holes look so tempting. My dog getting too old for much of a trek anymore. She still begs to go, but usually finds a spot by a shirt I'll lay down and stays till I'm done and ready to hike back. She might be my last and best dog. Any scouting for your wapiti or mule yet?. Your thread always a plus. Thanks.

Thanks Doug, I really should take my old snorkel and mask up to those lunker pools one of these times. I finally had a chance to take my friend Dan to one of my spots. I'm thinking that you have another dog in you. If I had the looks, charm, and personality of Hank I would have too many Girlfriends to even think about hunting. He did however charm Dan's wife into adopting him for the first week of elk season. Which leaves me with no excuses to not be up on a mountain somewhere. I have been preparing and hope to get a couple of hikes in up there prior. I bought an otc with caps bear rifle tag this morning that is good concurrent with the four deer/elk rifle seasons.

George, everyone of your pictures are wonderful to see. I enjoy seeing them very much. I used to fish in northern Maine for brook trout and the fishing was excellent there as well. However the black flies were a stiff price to pay for being in the woods. You haven't mentioned them; do they not inhabit the western woods? That would be super if so!

There was a well told story about the size of the Maine Mosquitoes; It went something like one mosquito says to the other, "there is a nice plump looking tourist;should we eat him here or drag him back to camp?

They were not quite that large but if it wasn't black fly season,it was mosquito season or deer fly season and 100% Deet had not yet been discovered. I remember we used to carry a spray can of OFF insect repellent back then. When the bugs got so thick and unbearable we would take out that Off and spray it on a stump. The bugs would flock to it. We'd run a short distance and have a few minutes of zero bugs. What a relief it was.

Seriously is this something you are not experiencing in your mountains?

Thanks Dave, I haven't seen many if any mosquitoes or deer flies but the last trip out we were covered up in black flies around mid day when the sun came out.

Beautiful trout streams; there is no place I'd rather be! I had the pleasure of shocking WI trout streams for the DNR, and noted that bigger fish are down stream, but so are more people.
