I saw a street CC tree do the same last week.
I asked a chestnut buddy about it and had this exchange.

"Vigorous chestnut trees in areas with long growing seasons will frequently do it. That's my situation. In other cases, trees that have had some type of damage early in the year will play catch-up."

This tree was grown from nuts picked up from a Buck IV.

Thanks for the info! Very good info. My trees are still very young and although there were mail catkins no female formed so nothing got pollinated.

I had this exact same thing happen on a Walmart Dunstan that I had in a 5 gal rootmaker. I bought them late in the season on sale. Decided to keep them in rootmakers until the fall instead of planting in July. It produced catkins around Aug 1st.

LOL! Yeah, apparently it's a fairly common thing especially with young trees that didn't set nuts in the spring. Looks like all male catkins.

Yep! I hope it holds out for another month or so though. This tree was grown from a nut that was picked up from under a Buck IV tree. My hope is that the late dropping gene was passed on to it's offspring. We'll see...
