Check your Chestnuts

Oh and some form of weed protection would be good too. Optimum would be to spray around base of tree with weed\grass killer, then lay down weed barrier topped with mulch. I did that last year and just went with mulch this year without spraying. I can already see a few sprigs of grass coming through the mulch. I’ll probably end up spraying week killer on top at some point to kill anything that makes it though.

Only through contact, not through the soil. Spray on a calm day, put a cardboard shield up, set your sprayer to a course droplet setting, etc. One thing to be cautious of is if you are spraying tall vegetation around your small trees. I have some seedlings that have tall grass growing around them (though my own neglect). I trim or pull the grass short before spraying it so that wind doesn't cause it to rub spray against my seedlings and transfer the wet gly.
 
You can actually get gly on the bark of tree and it’ll be fine. You have to get it on the leaves. Now with that being said I wouldn’t spray it on the bark of very young seedlings or trees. To be on the safe side I’d use a piece of cardboard or something to shield the tree. Being that yours are in tubes just spray around the base of tube and you’re done.

They may be a little young yet. In AL, I would think you would be seeing at least the start of catkins forming by now. The tree looks like it has been leafed out for a while as the leaves are huge.

My biggest chestnut looks like it’s dying. I have no clue why. It’s 25’ y’all and has produced for a couple of years now. Frustrating.

What species of chestnut cut? The low country definitely isn't traditional chestnut habitat but Chinese are supposed to tolerate zone 9. I just wonder about the humidity and salt air.
 
Can someone post a picture of a female flower or one that has just started forming? I’ve been constantly monitoring my trees and even though they have bloomed like crazy I’m not so sure any of them are female which could eventually turn into a chestnut. The blooms on my Dunstans are starting to turn brown so that tells me they are about finished. I was hopeful that I might get a few nuts this year but the more I look at the trees the less hopeful I get. I found the pic online from the NCF which is more of a drawing than anything. I’m look for actual pics of forming Chestnuts in a tree so that I know what to look for.

Matt,

I never see female flowers, but my trees have produced nuts for several years now. Don’t give up hope yet.
 
I checked my Dunstan today they are about 8ft tall and between a nickel and dime size round. I took the grow tubes off today to clean out old leaves and notice the tree is growing wavy is this normal or is there something I should do to make it grow straight.
 
Here is what I believe to be a female flower on a Dunstan I bought as a 3 gallon tree last year. It sat in my driveway last summer and I transplanted it last fall. Another Dunstan next to it had catkins on it so helpfully I will get a nut this year. One of the trees I bought last year grew a nut in the driveway.

Thanks for the pic. I took the time yesterday to look over the trees at my home orchard and managed to find one bur out of six trees that I thought might have a chance to produce this year. These are all five year old trees grown from seed.

Good news is this is one of my late droppers. However I guess I set my expectations too high as I was hoping for a lot more.

While out over the weekend I think one of mine is sick or dying. It just doesn't look like the others and it was producing nuts last year for the first time. I am not sure what I can do if anything. The only thing I can think of is if it got some drift from the ag field while the others didn't somehow.... Left - close up of leaves curled and browning, Center - the tree as a whole is lacking a lot of leaves, Right - this is a chestnut 10 yards away and seems to be doing just fine. I have 3 of these in a row and the center one is the one that seems to be failing......while the other 2 seem fine. All 3 are chestnut hill trees

Planted 3 Dunstons last spring. Last one's my nearest store had, kind of looked like they fell off the pallet while unloading. All are looking good now, with the strongest of the 3 showing catkins. Hopefully next year another will join the party so I can get a couple of nuts from them.
