Bowfishing- My offseason bow hunting.

I'm always jealous of all the exotics and pigs that a lot of you guys shoot in the offseason. I don't have really any access to any of those hunts close to home.
This is how I spend my offseason when I'm not doing habitat work. It has become one of my favourite things to do with a bow. Last weekend a buddy and I got into a whole mess of grasscarp in a freshly flooded backwater off the Mississippi. It was kindof nice shooting something other than the flying Asian carp. Grass carp have always been considered a large trophy in my area bowfishing. The biggest one out of all of them was 42lbs. Any other bowfishermen here!? Let's see some pics!

Sometimes if I'm shooting Buffalo out of clean water I will eat them. Usually, I add all my gar and carp into a pile of horse manure out at the farm. I compost manure for a year with a small amount of lawn waste but I bury the dead fish and also all of our other gamefish and catfish filleted carcasses in there. I stir it every now and again throughout the summer.
Once it has composted for a year I spread it on our big garden at the farm and work it in. Ever since I started this we have grown an awesome sweet corn patch. I try not to waste anything I kill and eat it but unfortunately the Mississippi is totally overrun with invasives. We shoot a lot of fish out of agricultural drainage systems in the river bottoms where the fish are not recommended to eat. I feel like I get decent use out of them while attempting to help the river system in a very small way. Most people around here dump them in a ditch.

Swampcat I have followed a lot of your posts and you seem to do it all! I am waterfowl hunter also and I take yearly trips to Arkansas, Walnut Ridge area in NEARk and around Casscoe and Humphrey/Stuttgart region. I've done a ton of lurking in the Arkansas Hunting net forums and I've noticed you hit the waterfowl quite hard also! I enjoy your property tour and your posts and all of the forums.

We eat a few buffalo ribs. The rest go in the bone yard with the dead hogs.

I try to stay busy. Pretty much if you can catch it or shoot it - I am at least trying it. I am fortunate to have a piece of property that offers a lot of opportunity. It is not great for anything - other than hogs - but the opportunities are pretty varied.

Swampcat is that your boat? Looks like a hell of a setup. I am in the process of building a removable 18in raised aluminium shooting deck for my Lowe Roughneck 1860. Been a busy year so it may not be ready until next spring.

No. My son in law’s boat. 20’ airboat, 500 hp, 8 ft wide - can handle four shooters, half and half sodium and halogen lights let you shoot pretty much any water. Water down here is dingy to mud - unless we get down on the coast after redfish.
