Archery, will it ever be the same again?

Its sad that its become the organizations responsiblilty to defend the season. But the state wants dollars. The very existence of game depts isn't to serve us. In their minds, their job to secure their bureaucracies.

They will eventually legalize ANY weapon for bow season if it keeps the dollars flowing from license sales. As far as they are concerned... to hell with tradition.
It was said earlier...roll with change.
ITS FRICKEN BOW SEASON. Its supposed to be for BOWS. Not for whatever a deep pocket can convince the game comm to legalize.
I know a lot of guys that were "avid" (give me a break) compound hunters until x bows were legalized. And then these HEALTHY strong guys tossed their wheels into the classifieds and bought x guns. They care nothing about bow season.
I defend bow season. It should remain BOW SEASON.

Florida has a Archery Season. It also has a Crossbow Season.

They are both the same period of time.

But it also has a week of Buck Only Crossbow Season prior to the beginning of General Firearm Season.

Guess that satisfies your desire for separate Seasons.

Tap, I'm going on memory here, but was PAs bow season only a week or 2 long in the early to mid 70s? Seems a good friend of mine who lives central PA was always fussing our season was so much longer than PA. Do you remember?

I don't know Ron. I did some googlin myself, and the dictionaries, as well as the Pope and Young Club don't specify orientation of the limbs or firing mechanisms as qualifiers for who is and isn't a bowhunter. Unless your guy worked on the evolution of the entire English language, I don't think he can claim revisionist authority.

This whole argument is silly, and this is why deer hunters cannot form a functional lobbying group. We can't help segregate ourselves from one another. Bait vs plot, bow vs crossbow, scopes vs no scopes, pro rut rifle vs anti rut rifle, state vs state, region vs region, meat vs horns, fence vs wild, public vs private, and people that use barley vs those that just don't get it.

Let's be glad people still like deer. There aren't many of us left. No sense in cutting one another down.

I only remember our season being a month long. It may have been only 2 weeks at one time, I don't know.

I use a recurve, a compound, and a crossbow - and all manner of firearms. Typically, I use my weapon to match the hatch. For archery, If I am hunting at a bait pile in an area with a lot of deer - I choose a recurve. If I am using going to use an elevated stand and not on a baitpile - I normally take my compound. The most challenging for me, is when I use my crossbow - when I am hunting from the ground and not in a stand. I do basically the same thing when I am hunting with a rifle - if I am hunting where shot distance is limited - I choose my AR 15 .450 Bushmaster. When in the wide open - a .338. The .338 would kill them fine at 20 yards - but I choose my weapon to match the situation.

I fear you didn't spend enough time on the P&Y web site as you missed this.

The Museum gave me a Water Buffalo horn Roy Case Bought in the early 1930's to make Turkish horn bows. Im converting some of that horn into a knife or the museum. The last person to cut a piece of that horn was Roy Case.

Who is the pioneer and forefather of crossbow hunting? What is the rich heritage and history of crossbow deer hunting in the USA? Manufactures of them saw a profit stream and lobbied to get them wedged into existing bowhunting seasons in states with weak bowhunting orgs. I think that is the long history and why their users are not bowhunters.

Bowhunters Got the permit, cleared the land, built the house, furnished it and then crossbow makers showed up at the door with a customer and his suitcase and demanded to enter and live their having done nothing prior. Then some of them actually demanded to be called bowhunters. Then crossers get animated when history is pointed out to them. The State of Oregon told them to pound sand. States with strong bowhunting orgs were the ones that actually got crossers separate crosser seasons.

Now I'm sure you guys know where I'm headed here. Our bow season at one time started mid Oct and to this day now caries till end of year. Now the season starts in mid Sept. So now that we selfproclaimed dedicated archers have these ridiculously long season, the why is there drama of other weapons included in that time frame. Who designated that bow season is longer than rifle. Why is there even a rifle season? Why don't we have bow only season? Would those that are upset with the allowance of other type weapons in bow season be happy if we returned to the 1-2 week bow season such as PA once had, and then the cross bow and etc. hunters also have their 2 week season for only their weapon choice, then be happy? I doubt it. The seasons are now so ridiculously long then there is plenty time for all to have their own weapon hunt. So either group them all together, or make each have a week long seasons. God did not delegate the vertical bow as his approved weapon of choice, even tho I am certainly biased. I could care less if all weapons were banned but my choice of bow. Btw, only recurves have been allowed in Olympic comptition since 1900 so every one else doesn't count.

Does that mean I'm not a bow hunter, or that I can't be in their club?
Yeah, its a club. Anyone can join. Just shoot a bow and do so DURING BOW SEASON and, yes, you too can be a bow hunter.

What you are seeing isnt a debate. Its non-bowhunters trying to assert that they are bowhunters. That is folly on their part. We hold these truths to be self evident.
