Archery, will it ever be the same again?

Archery has been dead for quite a few years.
It developed a non malignant tumor with the legalization of 50% let off compounds. The tumor metastasized in the 1990s. It completely died with crossbow legalization. There is no such thing as "bow season" anymore.
Archery...RIP.

Archery of the future is actually going to be the arrow tube filled with a type of propellant, and fired like a missle. And a simple guidance system linked to your android tablet will come right after that...

I personally feel the biggest changes in archery "hunting" isn't in the weapon used, but in the methods of hunting. Box blinds, scent containment systems, bait piles, trail camera's, etc. have changed hunting more in my lifetime than what weapon the person is shooting. Granted, I spent countless hours practicing with my bow as a youngster and having the ability to shoot under pressure is a huge part of bowhunting, but with modern compounds and releases I can take several months off and still hit a bulls-eye at 30yds with my first shot back. I've also taught people how to shoot a compound in a single session. When I say taught, they walked away proficient enough to kill a deer at 20yds. I personally feel technology unrelated to the weapon has made the most impact.

With all that said... I think a simple solution would be a law that any arrow has to be released with fingers. No triggers of releases of any kind allowed. I feel this would bring archery back into bowhunting.

I think this post is confused. There is archery and there is bowhunting but this thread makes no mention of bowhunting. Archery and bowhunting are not the same thing. Crossers are not and cannot be bowhunters but hey can participate in archery. Bowhunting is not for everybody so its good that crossbows exists for those that are not or cannot take up the sport of bowhunting. I support crossers to do what they do even if I have no interestin it since I enjoy bowhunting too much to quit and take up a different sport.

Ron, I assume by “crosser” you mean someone who hunts with all weapons as do I. I can assure you I am a bowhunter and every stand I sit and place is set up with a bowshot in mind. I do not pay to go on any hunts. I have never been “placed” in a stand or blind. I actually enjoy sometimes taking a deer with my TC Encore .50 or my old Marlin 30/30 or my 44 S&W... it didn’t work out this year and I took both my bucks with a bow because that is just the way it worked out even though I would gladly have taken either one with a firearm had they walked out in that season they chose to come by in archery and I had my Bowtech compound.
Here in Oklahoma we have a lot of non crossers but it is not by choice if you know what I mean...

I agree 100%. I had that thought while I was typing my post up; that I might not exactly be on point. But being rushed I just finished my thoughts and hit post. I hope it gets interpreted the right way, that they are related for the purpose of this site. For me bowhunting was the impetus to archery. Being on a habitat site I would imagine most on here had similar experiences.

Sad some feel Bowhunting or Archery has died. Only the Stick and String users are the TRUE hunters. Well maybe, but when you cannot take heights and have Arthritis in most joints your opinions change. Go for it you young guys, Just stick with a stick and string, I agree with how hunting has changed. To me what is an unfair advantage? Like I said, What is deemed fair fluctuates with feelings and personal opinions. To me the elevated houses with windows, hot coffee, and heaters in them. Standing over acres of food, or you might call it BAIT,,with trail cameras at the deer trails entering Said food plots, that can tap into your smart pnone so you know when Mr. Big Bone will be within range, All this is a little unfair chase to me. But hey,,It's legal. I on the other hand,,with my Cross Bow,,its a bow not a gun, sit in my home made brush blind. On deer trails, and pinch points that I have observed by scouting. I never know what may come past. NO cameras, NO bailt piles,,,Just me trying to blend in with Nature. Does that make me superior to other forms of deer hunting. I sort of feel so, but it is just my personal preference...

I feel pretty good about the future of bowhunting. Could care less what folks choose to use as their archery weapon of choice. I tweaked my shoulder about a month ago trying to shift the F/R lever on the electric cart and could barely draw my bow. The thought occurred to me...what if my shoulder blew out and I couldn't draw my bow. I'd prolly be in line for a cross bow. Glad to report I'm good to go and honestly, I love bowhunting as much as I ever have using old fashion stick n string recurve. I seldom kill anything other than the occasional pig but I honestly watch lots and lots of deer from the stand within range of my skills. I'm trying to kill a decent buck but I've failed every time they get within range as I've not mastered the ability to draw on em without getting busted. I'll figure it out eventually. Until then, use your weapon of choice and get it done as you want. My youngest 4 yr old grandson is getting his first lil' longbow for Christmas. Hope to start him early on the bowhunting adventure.

I'm pondering the philosophy of this. Are we saying that we should make the hunt as difficult as possible so that we "earn" our deer?

My stance has always been that it's up to each person to determine their ethics as a hunter and what constitutes fair chase. I have no problem with recurves, compounds, crossbows, slug guns, high powered rifles or any of that used to take deer as long as the deer was hunted in the spirit of fair chase.

I definitely have some practices I deem unfair and do not participate in, but as long as someone else thinks they are within their ethics and legal, I cannot sit on a high horse and tell someone what they are doing is wrong, I can only state I would not have done it.

Only According to YOU.

So for YOU that is a True Statement. For OTHERS it is far from true. But if keeping that thought in your head allows you to sleep better at night, then go for it.

I have seen this video more than once. His stuff does take Archery to another level. Rapid Fire Bows, that you can shoot accurately.

Simple design that anyone could use as well.

Who really knows where the Sport will be in the future?

LMAO we people are always wanting the past. Nothing ever stays the same, move on. If it bugs a person, then choose to weapon up the way you think it should be and ignore all others just as with anything in life. I hunted all but 2 times with my recurve this year, passed 17, 2.5 yo or better bucks with 6-9 pt racks, and countless does on just a few short hunts.. There was a day when I would've been happy to just have seen a buck during bow season. So hell no I hope bowhunting is never the same. And make no mistake, the only way to do anything is the way I do it, goes without saying. Enjoy your hunts guys, and remember traditonally on all these forums, everyone tends to get a little grouchy as the season begins to be over. It can be a long 10 months for some of us before we hunt deer again. :)

Technology and the adoption of it is an individual choice. You can still drive a model T or use a horse and buggy if you wish to do so. You can still hunt with a stick and string if you wish to do so. You can use the flint lock and old patch and ball as well if you wish as well. I'm not saying I support that these "air bows" and the like are a purest definition of "archery".....however, many felt the same way about "wheels" on bows as well!

If we try hard enough, we can convince ourselves of anything.

I happen to think hunting (for example) is about to get really good nationwide.
