2018 corn planting

I think it was $300 or so for freight. Took about 5 days to arrive.

Looks really good Cutman. Other than spraying the rye with glyphosate following planting, did you spray any more? Field looks really clean in the little bit that can be seen. What were your inputs and how did you apply?

I sprayed one month post-emergence with generic glyphosate mixed with Permit at 1oz/acre. The Permit controls yellow nutsedge and the glyphosate controls everything else.

I can’t remember exact fertilizer inputs but I think it was 150 lb of 34-0-0 per acre 2x2 at planting (2” beside seed and 2” deep) and then I top dressed with 300#/acre of 34-0-0 when the corn was knee high. Soil sample showed that I didn’t need any other inputs.

No bears. And luckily no hogs. Lots of coons and deer.

I think when my planter bites the dust - that is the route I'll go too. Our soil is heavy loam and rocky- do you think you get 2" planting dept because your soil is light - or does the planter have the ability to no till into heavier soils? Curious on your thoughts - I till now -and use a 4 row 1950s-1960s vintage IH 4 row planter.

I’ve added some things to the planter to make it more suitable for no-till. It’s got the heavy duty springs for added down pressure, aftermarket closing wheels springs, Martin row cleaners, and Keeton seed firmers. The dry fertilizer box is also essential (you cut set up a planter with liquid fertilizer as well). This year I raised the row cleaners during planting because they weren’t necessary.

The biggest issue is usually closing the seed trench. I finally solved that this year. The most important factor for a successful planting is proper soil moisture at planting time.
