11/12/2016 indiana opening day buck

Awesome deer! Score? Also, what causes those little holes on the main beam, we killed one with that this year ? Great job!!

Did not score him, brother was guessing 165-170 , and not sure what causes the holes I have killed 3 with hole.

Wow, that would be a buck of a lifetime for me. Absolutely beautiful buck.

Don't know for sure but I have heard that ticks can cause holes like that when they attach during velvet???

That's a superb buck, by any measure, or lack thereof. The cumulative effect of a one-buck rule is something more states should take a look at, because Indiana is turning out more and more deer like this, each fall.

I hope you stick around and tell us more about the habitat and herd management efforts that fostered the growth of such a fine specimen of a deer. There is always so much more to the story than a smiling hunter and a large set of antlers. :)

What a super buck. I see a 6 by 5. A great set of antlers always produce many questions:

1. Did you know him or did he just show up
2. Got trail cam photos - how many & starting when
3. Is your farm or you hunt on other people's land
4. What time of day
5. Was he by himself
6. How many years of history with this stud

Just tell it like it happened. Please :)

Congrats on a beautiful trophy.

Actually I bought my first small parcel of land last fall , that I have tried my first food plots, tree planting and a little habitat work. I killed this particular buck on a friend's of mine property that I have hunted for about 12 years it was logged out a year before I started hunting it. The first few years I did a little clean up control from the logging company, set 4 stands up and cleared paths. Since then, I only go in once a year around the first week of August to check stands and mow paths, I don't set cameras or do any other work at this property. It is small 15 acre set of woods that has grown up very thick with wonderful cover and bedding. The one buck rule had definitely made a huge difference , this is my second buck of a lifetime as far as I am concerned in the last 4 years out of these woods. It was opening firearms afternoon around 2 when I got set up on the edge of the woods . I heard him grunting and chasing a doe around 215 and did not see him till he came by a small opening where i could get a good shot around 330. never saw him in bow season.

Thanks for the updates, Steven. Harvesting a buck on land you've helped make small improvements to is very rewarding, but even that pales in comparison to doing so on your own land. What plans do you have in mind for your parcel?

Steven,

Thanks for the details. Never saw him in bow season - can't say that is a surprise. Property is thick and to get a beautiful headgear like that - his survival skills had to be super.

You have a great trophy - congratulations again.

I killed a much more modest 8-pt in Wisconsin one year that had an almost identical hole in his antlers. Not sure what causes it, but it makes sense it would be something that occurs during the velvet period.

Damn it Steven! I have everyone here convinced we (IN) don't have any BIG deer (trying to keep them all for us Hoosiers) - and here you go shooting HUGE holes in that!:D

Great buck and yes one of a lifetime. Congratulations......and I am obviously just joking about posting pics. Glad to see another Hoosier here, don't be a stranger.

Having seen this buck posted on a variety of sites, with the user joining more or less just to post pictures, I'm a little concerned as to whether or not he will be posting more stuff about habitat improvement or herd management. Hopefully this is more than just a "look at my big deer" kind of member.

I would like to see him stick around and contribute as well.....but, who knows.

The hole in the horn is caused by a blood vessel that supplied the velvet- I have a few antlers that display that hole.
