This year I found two more groups of wild hazelnuts on my farm. I marked them with ribbon and will go back this winter and dig up whips to set in my tree planting. Getting plants from different bushes and planting them close together will help with pollination every year. They are shallow rooted and easy to dig, I just get a big root ball.

So far I have been able to do this without caging. They do get nipped but not enough to hurt them. However, I planted some European Hazelnuts and they get hit hard without cages. It may have been the location I put them, because the traffic is high there.

You won't have to work hard to become a mountain hermit, because you are very close right now.... Good luck on your hunting my friend!

Mark, I've had touble with worms in chestnuts but not seen any in hazelnuts. My problem is getting them before the squirrels. I have found that you can pick them a little green and let them contunue to ripen at home. I start watching for little brown spots on the outside and when I see those, I go ahead and pick the hazelnuts. You can crack and eat them at that time, but they won't taste as good as they will in a few weeks.

Thanks Rusty. Yes, I'm still in the hunt. I plan on hunting as much as I can for several days starting November 10.

My son killed that buck last Saturday afternoon (Oct 20), and that same night we had pictures of the 14 pointer. That makes me feel like he was somewhere else when the shot was fired, or he wouldn't have shown up on camera 3 or 4 hours later. Four days before our hunt I had pics of him in the plots an hour before dark.

However, he is definitely ranging out more and not showing up as much. The same is happening with the 9 point that ran with him all summer. He is still around be showing up less frequently. I've gained a few new bucks in the last couple of weeks, but nothing over 3 years old.

I'm going to check a few of my cameras later this afternoon. The only deer I'm really interested in now is the big one or perhaps another one as big as him that might come in during the rut. This sure is a fun time of the year. Thanks for checking in!!

Well, the cam check this afternoon made me happy. He came in very early yesterday afternoon, and I was still getting pics at various places on the farm just before daylight this morning. So, we still have hope. I will try my best not to screw things up....

Dave, I was thinking the same thing about the does today. Another thing I thought - as good as it would be to harvest him, I would feel just as good if he made it through the season and we got to see him another year.

Funny u say that about passing as I jst got cussed this evening by the lady as we looked at todays cards and I said something about letting my shooter I’ve passed several years go one more yr and his 12 might explode. Won’t repeat her word but she did say jst take a camera instead of bow and quit pretending you are hunting. Lol
I did think of you today and your hazelnuts you sprouted. Found these germinating acorns everywhere today. Nature doing her own plantings.

Holy cow!!! What a stud of a buck! I'm sitting here thinking you and your son may seal the deal on taking 2 incredible deer in the same year on your own property. That 1st pic is pretty special with a slice of the barn in the background during daylight. Anxiously waiting to see the outcome of this pursuit...

dogghr, you should see my yard in the spring the first time I mow it. I'm mowing hundreds of little oak trees about 6 inches tall. We have 5 big white oaks in the yard, and I guess the acorns come up a little better in a clean yard with little to keep them from finding the dirt.

TC the thought of two good ones this year has crossed my mind. We have down years and up years, and this one has already been a special one.

The spot you see in that pic is where he stands and checks the wind before coming out. It's a good, low concealed spot with the west wind hitting him right in the face. If something doesn't feel right, he can be back in the tall grass in one fast move.

Your sons buck is really cool, love those monster 8’s. I wonder if the 14 point will feel more comfortable spending time on your place now that he’s gone?

I see usage of both the hazelnuts and chinkapins, but neither comes up with persimmon. I've noticed over the last few weeks that every persimmon gets cleaned up, and the tracks under the trees are crazy. I have sawtooth acorns dropping right now too, and you can find lots of those just laying in the grass right now.

I also wondered if that big 8 may have pushed the 14 out. He has been around less frequently lately, so that is possible. I will watch the cameras and see what happens now.
