Thank you Neahawg. It's strange how some years can be great for hunting and others not so good. We see that here too. The good thing is that I know you and Merle had some great family time together, and that is more important than any deer in the woods. That shooter that you saw will likely be even bigger next year, and I'm sure you guys will be out there after him.

TC, I appreciate that, and glad to hear from you. It is good to finally get the deer I was after. It was just great that my son got to join me that evening, and that made the hunt even more special. Best wishes to you and your family on your hunting.

Thanks Chip, and I do have some pretty good pictures of the view that I think you will like.

This first picture is me standing approximately where the deer was walking the edge of the plot. You can see the blind in the distance, and you can see why I was having trouble finding a spot to get a clear shot. I was lucky that some Big Blue clumps had toppled and left me a hole to shoot at one point.

This next pic is a wider view of the plot. In this pic, the blind is now shown, but is to the left of the edge.

Here are some pictures from the blind just looking out over the NWSGs. In the first picture below, if you look to the left side, the deer fell in the NWSGs about half way to that cedar tree in the distance.

The next two pictures show my entrance to the blind through the NWSGs.

Your setup Native is simply perfect. Access is hidden plain and simple. I'd like to see a closeup of the blind with the sundeck attached. That sounds like the perfect way to spend a day rain or shine. I promise I WILL copy it.

Dave, I don't have any closeup pictures, but I will take some and post them later on.

PS: I'm getting ready to make a duplicate of this blind at another smaller property I own a few miles down the road. It's a whole different kind of property. Basically it is 7 acres of soybean fields and 14 acres of woods. Some of the woods are gently sloping, but I also have a bluff with a 30 yard pinch point of woods between the field and the bluff. I'm going to build the blind right on that pinch point. I will be looking down at a creek way below on the south side.

To the east of me there is a reasonable amount of hunting, but on the west side, it is miles before you get to any other hunters. You can see this place in Post # 460 on Page 23 of this thread. The only difference is that the boundary shows only 14 acres. I have added another 7 to the west in the woods. The new blind will be at the south edge where the little field inset goes to the south. The bluff starts about 30 yards south of that.

If anyone sees a better idea here I would like to hear it. My entrance to the blind will be coming in through the field from the north. I will cut a lot of shooting lanes to the east and west of the blind.

Looking at it with a blind below the field inset is a no brain-er but being it is a bluff to boot brings it to a must hunt spot. Have you put cameras there yet to pre-scout it?

Dave, I have never run any cameras there, but there have been some big deer come from the property in past years. I know of two or three deer that came from there that were at least as big and maybe one bigger than my deer this year.

I have never deer hunted on this property, but it has been my favorite property to turkey hunt on for years - even before I owned any of it. It is a turkey haven. The farm belonged to my Grandparents on my mother's side. In years past, me and one cousin were the only turkey hunters. There were some other family member that deer hunted.

Now, I own part of the place, and one uncles owns the rest. He doesn't hunt, so I basically have the whole thing to myself. I walked back there the other day on a foggy morning and surprised a 3 year old buck standing at the edge of the field. He seemed shocked to see anyone around. I will probably start running some cameras once the blind is underway.

Chip, look at Post #908 on Page 46 of this thread. It has an aerial. It is only 100 acres, but I try to make the most of every singe acre. The plots and stand locations are shown in that post. The one in the middle of the field is the tower blind. The others are ladder stands made out of treated wood.

I want a good stand somewhere on the northeast side of the place on that long property line. My trail cameras tell me that fence row is a hot spot - especially during the rut. However, there is hunting on the neighboring property there.

And there is still time this year to put out the cameras. Visually it looks like a slam dunk but I like as much intel as I can get before committing to a permanent blind location.

I have had everything figured out "perfectly" in places and ended up with a blind 60 yards from where it should have been. In my cases a few cameras out for one fall would have told me that ahead of time. So now even if everything seems obvious I like to verify it with camera pictures.

Found it, thanks. I didn’t realize you had that much ground planted in NWSG. I guess what I’m wondering is what you think the minimum size a NWSG planting should be in order to get deer to feel comfortable frequenting the area in daylight

I think that depends on the surrounding ground. I you are bordering good woody cover, you would probably have some deer venturing into only 4 or 5 acres of tall NWSGs. I you are surrounded by open space, I think it needs to be more acres. I can say that a field of 10 acres of NWSGs looks really big, and if no one is walking through it and messing things up, I would expect deer to be using it. However, if it isn't tall, don't expect much. it has to be tall enough for them to feel hidden.

Seriously the bluff sounds great. I once had a bow stand along a cliff edge with a mother white oak near. It was almost unfair for bucks with a 15 yd shot on that pinch. They did sometimes roll down the cliff which was ugly and I maybe let my bow go flying down it once, but that's another story. Have a great TG young man.
