Where to find potted chestnut trees?

Anybody got any good sources for more mature chestnut trees? Most everything I can find online is for bare root seedlings (12-18") but I was looking to get something with a couple more years of growth. None of the local stores carry potted chestnuts that I've seen, however I can get some 3 - 4 footers from Tractor Supply (ship to store) at $44 per tree, which seems like a decent price. Do you guys have any online recommendations for me to check out?

Can normally snag some come spring time at your local Walmart or Lowe’s. Sometimes if you want until mid summer you can get them cheap when the stores are trying to clean shelves. 44 bucks isn’t a bad price.

Looks like all i see on their site are smaller seedlings in larger order quantities. I've got some seedlings I put in the ground last year but I wanted to add just a couple larger ones this spring.

Walmart is sold out online. I'll keep my eye out at the local stores though. It appears I can get "White" Chinese Chestnut for $50 at Lowe's. Is "white" the same as your run of the mill Chestnut?

I keep an eye out at my local stores and wal-marts and wait for them to go one sale... I get them at down around $15 each then (3 gallon size) ...but I have to water them thru the summer. I planted my first ones in 2014 and they produced the first time 2 years ago. I slowly add a few every year or so.

That's my plan too but last year I didn't see a single one at the local stores and I was looking even before they went on sale.

Contact chestnut hill direct and see if they will send you some. You may have to order a minimum quantity...but it never hurts to ask.

I planted 8 in april 2015

harvested 8 nuts in 2017 and 86 in 2018!

they struggled in texas heat the first 2 years but seem pretty drought tolerant after getting established

I have enough trees to babysit but I may go ahead and get some of the marked down trees and put them in 5 gal pots and keep at home for a year. They were Dunstans from Chestnut Hill.

Best deal is the bare root chinese chestnuts from the wildlife group. You can get these for $3-4 a piece, 24-36 inch seedlings. These things grow fast! I have some that grew to 15 feet in 3-4 years. You'll spend 10X that amounted for potted seedlings, you're really only talking about an extra year or so of growth for the seedlings to reach 6 feet tall. From everything I've read, you're better off with chinese chestnuts over dunstan. Produce greater volumes and earlier.

From what I've seen, walmart is a death sentence for any living plant material. They are the worst about letting their garden center just dry up and die before they even notice.
I hope that doesn't happen here, that's at least a source for larger Chestnuts.

I purchased a bunch of these trees years ago and most had significant die back after planing. They did re-sprout but, I couldn't help but think I would've been far better off direct planting nuts in the fall or planting my own home-grown seedlings. I would've been a few dollars ahead as well.

Chestnut Hill and the wildlife group ship larger bare root trees to your residence. As already stated, Chestnut Hill ships to Walmart, Rural King and others. They can provide a list of stores that receive their trees. You’ll receive an email when the shipments go out if you’re on their mailing list.

The Wildlife Group prefers to sell Chestnuts in the fall/winter. Usually starting in November.

Chestnut Hill typically ships late spring through early summer. Colder climates receive trees later.

I got four hybrid chestnut trees from Morse Nursery in the spring of 2017. I think they were Spanish/Chinese crossed trees. They were about four feet tall, and had about three quarters of an inch caliper, when I planted them, that spring. Two of the four trees, bloomed last summer, and all four trees, came out of five foot tree tubes by the end of last fall.
