I’ve had the jelly before, betting the pie is even better.
Elderberry pie is an amazingly complex tangy berry flavor, and supposedly good for the immune system as well (although they are poisonous raw). Elderberry is an ethnic PA Dutch food, and I'll put our PA Dutch cuisine up against any food in the world. Every time I travel to a third world country I always find that I'm a bit underwhelmed by the local food. of course, growing up Amish, even though we were poor, food was never lacking and we always ate pretty hearty.
Here's some of our bucket list foods every food lover should absolutely try. How much of the following PA Dutch specialties have you ever tasted?
Scrapple, soft pretzels, caramel pudding, cracker pudding, glorified rice pudding, pork& sour kraut, shoofly pie, hamloaf, ham balls, corned beef, mennonite sausage, potato filling, homemade gravy, ground cherry pie, rhubarb pie, green tomato pie, whoopie pies, sticky buns, chipped cream beef on potatoes, baked oatmeal, chow-chow, fasnachts, brown butter noodles, dandelion greens with hot bacon dressing, potato salad, macaroni salad, kidney bean salad, pig stomach, seven day pickles, bread-and-butter pickles, pickled red beets, red beet eggs, deviled eggs, cup cheese, egg custard, junket, chicken corn noodle soup, schnitz und knepp, apple butter, church spread, Lebanon bologna (lepnun baloney), rivel soup, apple fritters, apple goodie, apple dumplings, and a dozen more...
