What to plant between my oaks/chesnuts?

I have several areas that I have planted oaks and chestnuts on 20-25 ft centers in rows.....we plan to mow the rows, but I wouldn't mind planting something between each tree to be food until the trees begin producing. I was thinking some small shrubby thing of some sort. Needs to handle browse well at early age but also not spread too crazy as I may want to kill it in 5-10 years.

I have a row of oaks planting on the north side of one of my food plots, spaced at 30 ft. Saturday I am planting a few hazelnuts and chinquapins in between them. Dont know how it will work out, but thats the 2 i am trying in between.

The USDA Map shows that Allegheny Chinkapin (AC), grows in Ohio. AC will produce in abundance in 3 years, if it likes where it's planted, and it tolerates full Sun to partial shade. A word of caution on the USDA Map... a state will be green if a plant grows anywhere in the state.

AC produces a sweet tasting thin shelled chestnut that deer prefer over bitter tasting nuts. AC flowers after all threat of frost, so in years when frost hits oaks and there are no acorns, AC will still produce.
