Weekend project

Here’s and update on what’s happening.
1.Got some Yates, honey crisp and moon glow grafted. Tried using bees wax to seal cuts. Hot wax melted my rubber bands a few times. I think I prefer the tape and wood glue.
2. Been turkey hunting a few times.
3. Bought a Heseman farms drill from Collin, right off our deerhunter forum
4.put out 3 more bee hives.

Sheds, hives, turkeys, time with the kids!
You look to be having quite the time!
Are those specifically grafting bands?
Richard Fayhey brags on them though I've never tried them.

I planted some fruit trees this weekend that I had grown from seed and grafted. Also planted some chestnut trees. 11 fruit trees and 4 chestnut. These are 2 year old trees grown in root maker products. Real impressive root balls. I caged some and tubed the others.

Those were really impressive roots. What root maker product did you use? I have a couple of orange trees my son started and they are ready to be moved in to a bigger pot. Would this same root grower help a 3 year old tree?

Holly,
I’ve been told that when using rootmaker products you want to start them and begin air pruning at 4” which is ideal. Then transplant in bigger pots. With that being said, I’ve potted bare root apples in 2 gallons and they grew with good roots. I would have to say it would help create more roots which I have experienced.

Here is a good read on them. I’ve used rootmaker 18 cell trays, 1 gallon pots , 2 gallon rootmaker porcupine pots and the rootmaker mesh bags.

Also, I will add that when planting rootmaker products in the field I now try to knock off as much potting mix off the roots as I can. In the past I have planted the entire media with the roots and it appears to make for a great home for voles.

Last fall I planted grain rye, vetch, peas, crimson and radish. The weed mat was pretty thick. When rolling or crimping the thicker the better.

Last time planting trees, lol. I felt that way too in april when I transplanted my 37 trees. It's a lot of work and for whatever odd reason stresses me out but 2 weeks later when they were all awake, I was happy as a lark and no planning next seasons ventures lol. :)
