We are blessed with an abundance of the box turtles. This is not the first time I have photographed them inflagrante delecti. The first time I witnessed this I heard the shells clacking. Thought many would find this interesting.

Have caught that show myself. In the past 7 years I have probably tagged 25 box turtles by writing my initials and the date in marker on the shell. Have yet to see one a second time, although I now wonder if it wears off.

Ha, same thing here, i heard a forester say that a large population of box turtles is a good indicator of a healthy eco-system.

I love all turtles, but box turtles might be my favorite. If I’m driving and see a turtle crossing the road I cant help but stop and move them to safety.

I've often wondered how Turtles continued to survive seeing as how hard it is for a male and a female to even find each other in the woods. But I recently read that a male's sperm can stay vital inside a female for up to a year. The female can actually have multiple seperate "egg layings " from a single sexual encounter.

I've found them in the field and moved them to a spot safer from the mower. An hour later found it in the original spot I found it. The thing about them being slow is a myth.

Carve your name in them next time....not that anyone cares but here is a funny story.

My uncle in Ohio calls me (around the year 2000) and asks if I ever carved my name in a turtle shell. He found a turtle with my name carved in it. We used to spend summers in Ohio on the family farm. I told him it wasnt me. Well when I was a child I broke my arm and spent a week in the hospital (1986, it was a nasty break). When family came to visit me, half of them went to the wrong hospital room.....it was the other David Yoder! I was a child at the time and didn't know him, but years later he would carve his name in a turtle shell to be found by my uncle.

^^^ That's crazy. What are the odds.
I saw a box turtle in the woods with someones initials painted in red on the shell. It looked like fingernail polish. I have no idea how long that would last but the nearest neighbor was over a mile away from us. It kind of gave me a creepy feeling there for a second, I thought we had an artistic trespasser.
