Trapping before fawn drop.

Picked up a dozen mb550's, a book and other supplies to get started removing yotes before the fawns hit the ground. I started early March, Ended up taking 6 yotes so far by traps, shot 3 others late last year, caught and released one cat. I was seeing alot of scat prior, not much now. Still getting cam pics of a few. Hopefully it'll help.

Awesome job, love trapping. Some clam it doesn't have that big of an impact due to outside migration back onto the property. But I believe if timed properly it can have a huge effect on the local level for short critical periods of time during either nesting or fawn drop.

And I will say, after fur trapping in Nov, Dec, its kinda nice trapping in Apr, May Jun. Heck of a lot easier conditions to deal with.

Thanks,
Trapping is all new to me. I read the coyotes will repopulate fairly soon, just trying to give the fawns a better chance for survival.

Nice going! Must have been a great book. Please be sure to report on the end results.

Thanks,
I don't recall the name of the book just now, it came with a trapping starter kit. I learned & picked up more tips from you tube. Still I probably missed and educated more than I trapped...gotta learn somehow.

Just started trapping this last winter, dealt with a lot freeze, thaw, then snow cycles. Still a lot of fun and a good reason to get out during the winter months.

If you get a chance to look at the name of the book I would really like to know which one it is. There are a ton of books out there and this would narrow the search some.

This book came with the starter kit;
Land Sets And Trapping Techniques - by Charles Dobbins

YouTube & trapping forums were more useful for me.

Got my coyote traps set about a month later than last year, put a few out last week. Just picked off the first this year, a tick infested male. I've had a few dig ups, not sure why. Hopefully more to come.

Are you using gloves when you handle your traps. Never handle bait, lure, or your catch with the gloves you set with. Are your traps freshly waxed, or rusty? Suckers smell a rusty trap, too...

Always wear nitrile gloves, one pair for setting one for bait/ lure. Boiled my traps, use a kneeling tarp. Maybe something has picked up some scent? Been using polyfill under the pan on some, waxed paper on some. Wonder if the poly could have picked up some scent. I'll pay closer attention to dig ups and see if there's a connection.

Did you just boil them to remove oil? Did you ever wax and dye. Dye isn't really necessary, but I wouldn't use a trap that wasn't waxed.

We boil, paint with brown paint and let it dry for a week, and then dip them in Full Metal Jacket Trap and Snare dip. Works great. We have dig ups occasionally too. Don't know why they do it. The best we can figure is the trap wasn't set as solid as we thought and it moved.

Good job. I wish Missouri would let us trap coyotes year around. Like was posted earlier, trap them out in December and their back thick the time fawns are dropping. If I were you I would hit them hard the end of April and the first part of May.

Same here, NC trapping season ends in February. Not sure how much good it would do to remove them that early.

Used traps got pressure washed, boiled rinsed and waxed, they had already been dyed.

6 new traps got boiled twice, rinsed and waxed.

Yes, boiled to remove oil and scent.

I've heard of fmj, haven't used it though.
Dig ups drive me crazy, just not knowing why, scent, bedding, educated yote?

You'd think it would be better than nothing. I've also heard some areas repopulate sooner than others. Last year I pulled the traps at the end of May, seemed like 3 months or so without many showing on camera's.
