Temperature when killing stumps with GLY

I tend to cut trees in the winter. I read on the interweb that GLY is most effective with temps above 53 degrees. Can I still use GLY to treat tree stumps in the winter or is a waste of time if temps are much below 53 (20-40 degrees)?
Please share other recipes that will work for me in cold winter conditions. Thank you!

I've had good luck painting stumps with straight gly in the winter. It will soak in and pull into the root system with warmer temps. I sometimes mix diesel with my herbicides to help transfer into the cambium layer.

The way I look at is because I don’t live on the property and I’m there to do what I need to do,no matter what the weather is I treat them. I’ve had some come back from hack and squirt with gly but my objective was still met because it still thinned the targeted junk trees out and let the sun hit the ground or put more sun on a good tree/shrub.. if I waited around for the weather to be just right I’d never get to do any project.

My forester recently told me to wait until it is slightly warmer. Saying that it will be pushed out by the sap when it gets warmer. Not sure how true that is, but Im curious about this to.

My NRCS forester told me midwinter was a good time for basal spray treatment, but was recommending triclopyr and diesel fuel mixture, I'm not sure if glyphosate would be similar, I definitely would recommend mixing with an oil based product like diesel fuel, you will get much better performance than a water based mixture.

I very much prefer triclopyr/diesel mix over gly. I get more species killed with it than with gly (mainly locust).

You are spot on. But the number one reason that guys are using glyphosate is to save money, triclopyr is way more expensive. The place where triclopyr should be used is if you want to save time and do a basal bark spray with no hacking or cutting. The place where glyphosate works best is if you totally cut off the tree and then spray the stump with a mixture of about 1/3 glyphosate and 2/3 diesel fuel. This should get a kill on about any woody species for a cheap price, but with more work.

That sounded like a good deal until I looked at the label, Gordon's Brush Killer has 7.81% Triclopyr, 16.49% 24-D, and 1.38% Dicamba, with Triclopyr as the expensive component that kills anything, for $38.51 per gallon. Triclopyr from my local supplier is $63.50 a gallon, at 61.6% triclopyr content ($65.05 Amazon; https://www.amazon.com/Agri-Star-Triclopyr-Herbicide-Gallon/dp/B004S70RK4 ) which is a way better deal because you're getting almost eight times more triclopyr for not quite double the money.

Is there anything wrong with painting a stump with a little bit of pure diesel? Or maybe diluted a bit?

I spent many days this winter doing cut stump treatment of bush honeysuckle with 20% glyphosate. The temps were anywhere from the 30s to 50s when I sprayed and so far I haven't noticed any of the stumps resprouting.

Hey, buddy, the way I treat stumps like this--winter or summer--is after cutting I "paint" the stump with straight 41% glyphosate concentrate. You have to do it while the cut is fresh as once the cut dries and seals up it won't take the glyphosate readily. Doing it the way I do will kill any of those you're dealing with.
