Thanks for checking in Doug. Yes as I go through the motions finishing out the season
I sometimes find myself reminiscing about days spent west of big muddy.
Not exactly being new to this, one of my main rules developed back in Michigan was " the best way to never see a good buck while hunting is to hunt over a corn pile".
It just doesn't make sense to get killed eating corn during daylight hours when the threat leaves 1/2 hour after sundown.
My other rule adopted early and really refined in Iowa was " the best way to see a good buck while hunting is to supply the best groceries in the form of food plots". Since much of the hard work was done last habitat season this season will be spent finishing out clearing and cleaning what I hope to be around 2 acres. My main food plot tools will be the Bic, the sprayer, and the hand seeder.
From the stand looking through the new plot, across the main trail, and into acres of woods before diving off into the steep. This particular area really is nothing but junk, sassafras, red maple, tulips. Outside of a couple of pockets of 50-60 year old white oaks, there really isn't an oak to be found or even a dogwood for that matter. My main plan this year in such areas is to hack and squirt the daylights into it leaving nothing but the oaks and some select tulips. The Bic will follow or precede depending on the timing of sap flow. No fear of me burning you out Dogghr I'll be spending my days in the county pokey if I let the fire get onto the corporate property west of me. All in all, I'm happy with my accomplishments so far and my resolve to someday be a big buck hunter again has only strengthened.
Preceding and following my little puppy's giardia diagnosis I have been blaming my roiling gut on everything from my Loved Ones spicey cooking to the jalapenos in the deer sausage that my neighbor was kind enough to give me from the palmate buck. And after last night in the outhouse I have thrown in the towel and am now on my own 7 day treatment protocol to clear my belly full of protozoa. It's a good way to lose weight but also a waste of good food and it gets old after a few weeks. Tiny finished his 5 day protocol of panacur days ago and put on a pound yesterday and is now creeping his way back up the puppy weight chart for his mixed breeding. At 12 weeks on Tuesday he will be starting to look and weigh like Tank did when he was 9 weeks of age. Tiny was off the charts under weight where as Tank was off the charts heavy weight.
